Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just returned from my bicycling activity. 42 hot, windy, hilly miles. Left the house at 8:15, 75 degrees...returned at 11:30, 95 degrees. 3 water stops, 5 full bottles consumed. Glad I had a pool to dip into when I got home and that it's still a comfortable temperature...although after a dip and a shower, I'm still sweating.

Monday is normally a jog day with my buddy...but I think I'm going to suggest it be an MTB day instead.

It's a 58.

First longish group ride on it today. Love it.

Stiff, solid, light.....makes neat high modulus carbon sounds, and just feels like a racing bicycle should feel.

crash..cool stuff. Do you speak Slovak or Italian? I don't know why but I didn't think that the team would hang around California after the TOC...I figured they'd all hop on a plane and head back to their official training center or whatever. They make you look too fat for this sport.

Since Liquigas is sponsored by Cannondale, and so is Swami's in San Diego (one of the VERY few clubs/teams, I think it's like 1 of 3, in the US that get custom team bikes from Cannondale) it's pretty much a sponsor play.

and VV, in response to your cycling related question: I swam 2500yds today, short ride tomorrow and either a short ride or another swim on Mon. I work all weekend and am packing up the house which is taking away all cycling time.

Race report: 4th today. Pretty much set the pace for the whole race, at the front. Got a hell of a ride in. A guy that sucked wheel for most of the race, went at 4laps to go. I was second wheel when he went, just got done doing a turn at the front. Didn't have it in me to bridge it. Sprinted for second against 4 others, got 4th out of it. First and second, were second and third from Alexandria, which was my first win last year. The one guy told me during warm up that he was going to suck my wheel the whole time, because I always beat him. So I guess I am a marked man. I d...id all this with a headache, from a kinked neck. I am going to bed now. Oh, yeah and Josh won the pro 1/2 race, on my Zipp wheels. He broke his good race wheels in a crash a few weeks back, and I am a good friend so I hooked him up. I was planning to race tomorrow, but no way this neck hurts too bad, and I'd have to leave at like 4am.

It was fun. I guess I suffered revenge from Alexandria, but I had a good ride, and enjoyed ridding my bike. All in all, I'll take a top 5, especially since I did so much work at the front.

Had an OK ride today. We came to a fork in the road. For real my photo. I guess it has spaghetti on it.

I don't know if it's an option but I know someone who used Amtrak to ship a bike cross country for about $50...

Alas, I have officially withdrawn from the race in Austin.

I will instead be competing in Ironman Augusta, in September.

Closer to home, but a month sooner. I lost $175 on the registration, but it pales in comparison to the travel anxiety I was already having.
