Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just did a P90X workout. It was intense. Also, I'm down 15lbs from my 207 weight. I haven't broken below 195 in probably... a decade. Best part of it all is it has taken 5 months and a gradual diet/activity change. I ain't no yo-yo.

What a ride! 2 1/2 miles, two flats, one mile walk in my socks before a buddy of mine picked me up. The bottoms of my feet are now covered with blisters from the hot pavement.

Just wasn't my day......

I almost feel bad for the guy with 20+ sets of wheels, quarqs, powertaps, a colnago, .........

Kidding Lowcel, I would try the plastic inserts in place of a rim strip and get some tougher tires. You do seem to have struck upon a crosstraining technique at least.

is that some sort of tire liner?

I tried a kevlar liner of some sort once. It made the tires feel like I was riding on wooden wheels.

These are supposedly the best but I can't find any in stock.

It's a Mr. Tuffy. They do have the ability to make a $50 tire feel like a $20 tire. Worth the trade-off for me, though. I don't go off the bus routes when I'm riding without tire liners.

Dunno if they're the best, I've only tried them and some Enviro-friendly recycled ones in the late 90s. Mr. Tuffies are way better than those other ones, though. My local Performance had all widths in stock last week.

I put the plastic inserts in this time. I believe they may be too narrow since they were moving over just enough to expose the spoke hole. I plan to pick up some new Velox Tape and replace the tire. If that doesn't work I'm just going to throw the whole thing over a cliff. The good news is that I am now pretty sure that God is giving me a sign to replace the Kestrel.

I'm beginning to agree.

My flats haven't been caused by punctures from the tire side, they are from the rim side. The tire liners wouldn't be of any help.

Take it as a sign. Maybe something bad would have happened to you if you had made it out today.

Yep. The way the rim is the spoke holes are off center (both ways) so I need to get some wide rim tape to completely cover them.

Bikes: everywhere

I remember doing a 1.5 mile run in college. I clocked a 10:40. These days I wonder if I could even run 1.5 miles all at once.

I did run to the laundry room and back 4x today. Gotta be a good 120 yards !

Mrs. Herbie went for a spin with me today. Nice easy recovery pace, but she found a couple of the hills painful.

I do not think distance running puts the HR in the red like climbing a good hill on a bicycle does.

On the other hand there is virtually no recovery (like you have on descents on a bicycle) in running. More of a sustained effort.

I've never tried running with a HRM. Sure seems like I peg VO2 max much more quickly by running, though.

Tomorrow morning is the Cap-Tex Tri here in Austin. I rode my MTB down last year with my friends, locked 'em up and watched the transition area and portions of the bike and the run...then stood around the finish as the winners came in. I was a little surprised by the frequency with which medical attention was needed...and how many threw up afterwards. It was a hot and humid morning...and it'll be the same tomorrow morning.
