Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

what is frustrating is that I kept all the weight off through the winter. Then 2 weeks ago I was put on steroids and I gained 10# in a week (all fluid, but still)

So I need a car horn on my bike?

Do people really suffer oxygen deprivation at 6,000 feet? Or is that just an excuse?

O2 tension is about 81% of normal at 6000ft https://www.altitude.org/air_pressure.php

Does that have a meaningful impact on respiration?

No, the issue was raised in another thread. I never felt much of a difference, but I don't get up there very often, and when I do I'm not pushing my limits.

Is that thread as stupid as the one where a roly poly is arguing with a Cat 4 about the Cat 4s bike purchase?

It was fun. The organization of my task was a bit lacking, though.

Several days ago the guy send an e-mail saying that (at that time) he had two cyclists to watch 15 hand cyclists. I get there this morning and we had more volunteers than hand cyclists. It was silly to be riding along with two or more volunteers following a participant. But I went through the course with the handcyclists and then backtracked and patrolled a six-mile stretch of course for a while as runners came through. That made me feel useful.

Being a course monitor you get a much better taste of the event than manning a water station. You feel a lot of energy as you cruise by the runners and all the cheering (and cowbell ringing) spectators. I almost got a runner's high.

Runners running

Beautiful spring day in K-Town

Your reading skills sure are deteriorating rapidly. Better enroll in an English-as-a-second-language course soon.

Being illiterate really is an unnerving experience.

Nice pics. Knox in springtime looks great.

Well Tennessee is southerly. It tends to be a couple notches warmer down there.

Please tell me there were other distances being run...cuz some of those people in the picture do not look like they should be running a marathon!

And in weather news...we had our 3rd straight day over 80 degrees. All the trees are green, I'm watering the lawn and it's green too. Oak pollen is horrendous right now...my dark grey car has looked yellow over the last few days. I finally drove it through the car wash today and it washed most of it off. Thank goodness I'm not allergic to oak pollen.

Yesterday, I went for lunch at my prospective boss's house and met 3 other expats and their families (all americans). Not one of them had made the effort to learn to read and write chinese and they had been here nearly 10 years. It must be so frustrating.
