Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I do ninety percent of my riding on the 53 because I'm too lazy to adjust my front derailleur.

I got a much better deal at Fairwheel, and that with Alchemy and Tune hubs as opposed to the more prosaic DT Swiss. Email Fairwheel for a quote, so you know how far away you are from what you are missing.

Confession: The weight turned out to be 612 g front, 748 g rear = 1360 grams.

I made an old man pay for passing me on a ride the other day by flying past him at the start of a 1/4 mile long 5% gradient climb.

To be fair, I didn't know he was old, but I should have known based on his pedaling squares leg technique.

- Since I got rid of the Colnago, all my bikes weigh ~20 pounds, but I'm still a weight weenie.

- Yesterday, I made a new rule that I wont ride in temperatures over 85 degrees.

I almost got passed by an older woman on a bent this morning. She was gaining on us, until somehow her rear fender got sucked into her wheel and she fell over in the middle of the street.

We helped her, of course. Her bent had a motor.

Smoked a pair of younger guys on a 5 mile, mild descent today. It ended up me and a former cat 2 to reach the regroup point first by nearly a minute. It was awesome.

I learned later that one of them was riding the other guy's mother's bike, and the right (2005 9 spd Ultegra) shifter required the use of both hands, and the brakes were shot. His friend slowed to ride with him :/

I had to get rescued today, first time in 40 years. Got a flat and when I went to pump it up, noticed the back of the pump head (blackburn frame), had fallen off preventing a seal. I was out in the middle of nowhere Indiana 23 miles from home. In the 45 minutes it took my wife to bring me a pump I saw one tractor, no cars...not a one. Sometimes traffic is good.

All my anger, all my hatred goes into the pedals. Wind cuts my face and burns my lungs and there is no slowing down. We are not all interconnected. Some people on this earth do not need to exist. Some people just need killing. I would kill them.

F*ck you and your cushy 6 figure, get rich slow scheme job
F*ck you and your smoking hot f*ckbuddy, yeah that blonde one with the rack
F*ck you and you and everyone you know. Our lives are not even remotely comparable.

In the rage there is not even a suggestion of pacing. Only acceleration. Anger. Speed. Anger. Speed. I'm not going fast to win any race. I'm not going fast to even push myself physically. And the hurt starts to creep in; slowly at first but the pain becomes apparent and no matter how much hatred I channel into dying legs, only so much more speed results.

I am finally broken, a deathgrip on the handlebars white knuckled, utter delirium forcing me to a dead halt.

I am sane again until my rage builds. Then I ride.

You'd get to ride about 4 months of the year here. And while I'd love to live in California instead of this inferno, I don't want to have to earn $120k/year to rent a garage apartment 40 miles from the city.

+1. I used to use running as my "therapy", but biking is a much more effective outlet to stay sane.

I channel anger at the gym. Similar, but more explosive with weights. It works.
