Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am trying to learn what I need to learn in order to purchase my first proper road bike (my dad's hand-me-down Sekai doesn't count). Also, I don't want to walk into my LBS and look like a total noob.

In this present state of enforced isolation, I am encountering some difficulty measuring myself for potential frameset choices. I don't like asking for help, so I have given serious consideration to getting my girlfriend very drunk, waiting for her to pass out, and practicing (measuring) on her.

The fine line between inseam measurement and Class D felony grows ever finer.

I've been doing twice-a-day workouts this week getting ready for the Blood, Sweat & Gears in 10 days. Not sure if its the 2x a days, or adding in the interval training, but I'm dying here!!

Bikes: Have two wheels

The fork on my road bike is lugged, has a semi-sloping crown and is made of hi-tensile steel.

I bought a keg for the kegerator yesterday. Consequently, I drank a few work week beers. That's usually not allowed. It wasn't a special occasion.

Beer on tap makes you fat.

I just found out what "no drop" in group rides actually means. I was under the impression that getting in your drops (handlebars) was not allowed.

I just discovered (or re-discovered) that my GP4000's have a "Rotation ===>" marking on them. The front tire of one of my bikes is pointing the wrong direction. I will confess that this is why I've been so slow lately.

And I have another confession...I didn't realize until just this moment that I can simply remove the skewer and turn the wheel around instead of removing and re-mounting the tire! Of course, I'll have to switch my computer magnet over also but that's a lot easier than remounting the tire!

Just bought new wheels. After about a month of agonizing about which set to get, receiving quotes from four custom builders, pledging to spend $400-500, and starting multiple "which wheel?" threads...I went and bought a set today for Father's Day.

Forte Titans (Gasp!). $150. Just couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger on the more expensive sets. I've had Titans before and they were great. Will post pictures soon.

And in my excitement to get the new wheels on I forgot to put on the rim tape. (facepalm) Luckily I have a couple of extra tubes.

I confess that I initially read the last line that you forgot rim tape but had a couple of extra tubes...of rim tape! I thought "what kind of rim tape comes in tubes?"

My wife does not know how much I actually paid for our new road bikes! Or the money I spent since on accessories and kits!

My first time to a LBS I (akwardly) used cycling specific lingo to avoid seeming like an idiot. After talking to a worker for a while and catching on that he was a legitimately nice guy I had to confess I had no idea what I needed for my on-bike repair kit and ask for help.

I was originally a "seat post bottomed out" rider and had no knowledge of bike fitting. All it took was one person suggesting I bring it up to realize how much easier it was to transfer power.

The money I save on gas by drafting my car behind large trucks on the highway will eventually equal the cost of a new road bike.

It's science.

Hi, I'm OldsCOOL and I'm an earbudaholic. I've been clean since getting off the bike on the last ride.
