Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't believe I ever gave up cycling 17 years ago. A wasted and short career in the restaurant biz left me with a taste for rich food, booze and cigarettes. Finally kicked the booze and smokes by running for the past 4 years. Did my first tri this weekend and fell in love again with bike racing. I want to do the RAAM now. (at age 40 with a bad knee, but I don't give a ****)

Physical accomplishments feel even better when you are able to get rid of the bad things in life don't they. I wasted nearly 30 years on smoking and 25 on booze. Now I ride and love every second I am able to do it.

I got a trek project one after getting hit by a car last year. (thank you insurance company), I wish I would have bought a madone 5.2, I don't need the dura-ace componants.

I can't stop thinking about riding. Its all I want to do

Bikes: 2011 Serotta Ottrott, Serotta TI Road Bike, Serotta TI MTB,Ritchey Breakaway Ti Cross, Trek Rumblefish Pro, Cannondale Tandem

I've been separated/divorced from a 15 yr marriage for the last two years. I've been avoiding women because there's no one to tell me that I ride too much or spend too much on cycling.

I also confess to riding 16,000 miles, buying a new mtb, a Specialized Roubaix and a Serotta dream bike in the last 2 years so the spending too much on cycling would have a shred of truth.

I confess that I'm going to take my 2011 race reimbursement in cash and go directly to the LBS with it.

I'm not worthy of my bike and its an entry level bike, yet I already want to swap wheels.

I have SPD pedals on my road bike.

I put a stainless coffee mug in my bottle cage and do my best to pass other guys on road bikes with a cigarette in my mouth. I then wave and say hello in korean. "Ahn yong ha say yo"

I complain about being too big to be a cyclist but refuse to drop below 190 lbs at 5'10 . I'm 12 % body fat.

I failed out of ranger school because my knee gave out, and I'll never be a seal either because I suck at speaking other languages. I feel like everyone in the world should speak english, and am a dick when they can't. I feel bad about all of this.

I get mad when people thank me for being a soldier because I feel like they're blowing smoke up my ass.

I feel guilty because I'm more at home away from my family in some god forsaken land than with them.

I feel like a ***** because I'm in korea instead of afghanistan.

I really like cute fuzzy animals.

I am looking at CF frames while my student loans are about to kick in & I don't have a job yet.

Edit:
After rides I stop a grocery store to buy beer, while still in my gear.

12% is good man. Unless you're racing you're fine.

ehh, I've been buying bike gear left and right when I shouldn't be spending $$$. Needless to say I caught the bug @ the wrong time...I guess we're all guilty of it at some point.

In need of a cassette to replace the 11sp 11-24 and just ordered a 12-27.

I am moving from flat Chicago to hilly Seattle - do I get a special dispensation?

iit_architect - I'm on the northside near Wrigley Field. I hit the LFP a couple of mornings a week and on the week end go north to Highland Park and beyond with xXx, or occasionally Half Acre, or on my own. PM if you're interested in hooking up before I leave for Seattle in mid October.

Bikes: Pake Rum Runner

I masturbate at least 3 times a day

I have only worn a condom one time during intercourse

I love eating painkillers for my bad back

I smoke too many cigarettes but I roll my own so it's cheap ($1 a day habit)

I love Asian women but lately I've only been screwing around with white girls

I will probably die of liver failure or an STD or both

...but I'm in pretty good shape and ride every day

I have basically traded a vigorous dating life for a vigorous cycling life. Seems like a pretty good trade to me. Expenses are about the same - it costs as much as I have. A lot less drama, guilt, worrying about contracting ailments, etc. (Boy that doesn't speak well for my choices in women does it?) Sometimes, alone in my home late at night, I ponder the situation and worry that I may become a troubled loner. Maybe I will... but I should live to be an old troubled loner because I'm so fit.

So this isn't my confession. I confess that I am shopping for a SRAM 1070 with a 34 low gear because there some climbs I can't get up with a 26. THIS causes me intense shame.

I rode one evening this summer when it was 116. You get used to it. The intense heat burns off the humidity. Joy is where you find it man.
