I started riding again in July of 2011...first time since I was a kid. Since then I have:

1. Ditched my brand new hybrid after 2 months for a brand new road bike (wife wouldn't ride trails with me so I became a roadie) at another $900 in cost and told the aforementioned wife, when asked, that it wasn't a new bike, I simply "bent the bars cause they're easier for road use" (she knows...the demon! she knows...)

2. Spent entirely too much money on clothing and accessories. Do I need 4 pairs of gloves and 2 helmets and 3 pair of shoes? NO. Did I buy them? yes.

3. Cut gluten out of my diet not for nutritional and health reasons, or even an allergy... but because thats what I read one of the pro teams did and dammit, that's good enough for me.

4. Didn't test drive the first bike I bought back in July (hybrid) because I was embarrassed that I would fall over, damage it, and they'd laugh and snicker and make me buy it.

5. When I get to a puddle I slow down to a crawl and gingerly go through it, because I don't want to get my cassette or BB wet and dirty, but when asked if I ride in the rain and slop I say "Hell yes, it's just water, for pete's sake"!!!

6. I wish I had started riding again 20 years ago.

You sound like someone I'd enjoy riding with, except I wouldn't be able to keep up with you.

My sin of the day: went to the gym, rode a RECUMBENT stationary bike (the horror).

Muffin Man 01-12-12 01:21 AM

I tthink i like building the bike, and maintaining it a little more than actually riding it...

dougclyde 01-12-12 06:39 AM

Dudelsack-

You don't think you'd be able to keep up with me?? What would make you say that?

Since last year I have dropped 43 pounds due to diet and riding (259 to 216 at 6'3"),
BUT I'M NO FASTER!!

And one more I forgot to mention yesterday...

Sometimes after a long ride I fill the bathtub halfway up with water and turn the shower on and pretend I'm in a submarine that's been hit.

dnuzzomueller 01-12-12 06:58 AM

Sometimes even when it is a beautiful day outside I will get on the trainer and do intervals because I dont want to deal with all of the time constraints and actual ride produces (How far out can I go, what if I get a flat, it will cut my riding time, will the roads be open enough to do good intervals, etc, etc) more or less My confession is that I am an anxiety nut.

Hiro11 01-12-12 08:55 AM

I just bought a new frame and fork because I wanted one, not because I needed one. At all.

I often have more fun on my cheap steel singlespeed than on my full carbon superbike. This is because I'm less worried about damaging the steel bike and just ride the crap out of it on/off trails, on group rides, dirt roads etc. Also, I'm not that convinced it's all that much slower than my superbike, especially in groups.

I'm buying a set of carbon clichers even though alloy clichers are almost certainly more practical, just as light and almost certainly safer. This is probably a dumb decision.

Most shamefully: I didn't want to buy my kids a piano this year because I didn't want any hassles from the wife about how spending money on more uneeded bike crap isn't in the budget. I'll end up getting the piano, but I'm not proud of my initial reaction.

On second though, perhaps equally shamefully: I enjoy the movie "Blue Crush" and not just because of the hot girls.

That's just weird. I'm rethinking the group ride thing....

LOGICK ONE 01-12-12 10:31 AM

Sometimes when it's a cold, rainy day; I like to put the movie "the notebook" on and have myself a good cry.

I do that more than I want to because I travel a lot. My behind always hurts afterwards so I'm thinking that recumbents are not that comfy...

duckbuster 01-12-12 08:51 PM

I listen to music when I ride. Very girly 80's music

Up or down periscope?

Creakyknees 01-13-12 08:36 AM

Other riders think my bike is very cool (Cdale Black Lightning, limited edition Campy with gold accents, quite blingy). I just think it's a bike. Also, I barely maintain the thing; right now it has a terribly annoying BB creak, but I've been riding it this way for weeks now.

 Probably true. However, my Rivendell is now sportin' Look Keo Classic pedals just purchased today. I was throwing around the idea of getting some clipless for it this year and these seem like a good choice.

Another confession: On century events, I find myself drafting behind the tandem riders.

Recumbent stationary bikes arent very recumbent. The ones at my gym hurt my butt, too. I just HTFU.

Been seeing the thread title "You Shall All Covet the Latest Pcad Acquisition", but I still don't covet anything of his at all, nor anything in the parody/spin-off threads.

Too be honest, they hurt my butt too, but a lot less than the saddles on the upright trainers.

alexaschwanden 01-17-12 12:09 PM

I rotate my tires every couple of thousands of miles, even when they still look good.

skoobywrx 01-17-12 03:08 PM

while in the basement, i can't not touch my bike, and feel the need to adjust something.

trickky 01-18-12 12:12 AM

That's kind of obvious, seeing as how you haven't noticed the "Reply With Quote" button yet :-)

Confession: I couldn't make it far enough into the "You Shall All Covet the Latest Something Something Pcad Something Something Acquisition/Addiction" threads to figure out what Pcad had acquired/become addicted to.
