Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"triple P" *, glad you are doing well and getting out. take care.

Hospitals are a bummer (very useful at times, but sucks to be in there !) - something about being full of sick people I guess.

Take it easy and take your time. No point in rushing in.
I wish it was a choice. Poor and miserable isn't working so well.

Looks like I am late to the party as usual. I hope you're feeling better chief. Sounds like you really dodged a bullet.

You do have a point there.

How does the treatment actually work? For example, if you're taking blood thinners that neither thin your blood nor dissolve clots and they don't remove them surgically, what is changing between when you were admitted and today, tomorrow, or next week for that matter that makes it OK to ride again?

The body can deal with clots on its own. Many of us clot and "unclot" lots of times without it being a problem. Warfarin and other similar products prevent the clotting from taking place, or reduce it considerably, allowing the body to deal with the existing clots. I think that the Heparin (?) - the injections - actually dissolves clots, so it gives the body a bit of a head start. At least that's my understanding of the process.

I don't know. My doc says the clots in the leg and lungs will resolve themselves organically. I think the blood thinners make it much less likely that a clot would travel and cause another embolism. Anyway he said I could ride. Like I said, I'm holding off to at least the weekend to be more prudent and to get some feedback from some of the (considerable, real world) medical experts here (not joking about that, there are some real medical pros here giving me real input that is much appreciated and augments what I hear from my own doctors).

I don't think many doctors know what they are talking about.

I have no formal medical training.

How do you spell Pcad? I spell it: d-r-a-m-a. If it isn't tales of cable routing issues, broken bike parts, or woeful winter weather, there's always the medical sagas.

Like a soap opera: when you think the end is near, it isn't. It never ends.

The scary part is the inherent (limited) accuracy in this statement, as many doctors would tell you.

Of course this applies to many professions. It's just that when the other professionals make mistakes it tends not to kill people so much. Higher stakes in medicine.

I take great solace in the knowledge that I am dumber than most doctors, and I prove that by trying to kill myself from time to time.

Most dumb doctors, just treat symptoms, and get their patients addicted to medications. So most of the time, they don't kill you, just make you into an addict.

How did you get the edema in the first place?
And why did that problem lead to blood clots in your lungs?
Not that I'm trying to avoid this or anything.........
Hope you recover quickly.

Canadians don't get this condition. They get hit by logging trucks or gigantic oil sands vehicles.
