Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A tale of two frames.

I've been shopping around for a new bike for quite awhile. And I have set aside a sum slightly in excess of $1000. As of right now I am looking at either a Trek 2.1, or a Giant Defy 1. Both are similarly equip, so the question comes down to the frame, obviously personal fit is the first question but I have test ridden each bike to a limited extent and find them both the be a good fit so far. I'm just wondering if anyone one has any experience with either of these bikes, or anyone has any opinion on which bike will be a better investment when I upgrade parts.

Bikes: IRO SS / Trek 2.1 / Trek 5.1

I have never ridden the Giant, but I currently own and ride the dog snot out of a 2010 Trek 2.1. I'm very happy with it and would make the purchase again if faced with the choice. In my opinion, the 2.1 is very worthy of future upgrades, and I'm in the process of collecting all the SRAM Rival pieces I need so I can trade out the 105 group. (weight savings and personal preference)

Yeah, my plan would be to eventually upgrade to SRAM. I did think about going used, but up until now every bike I've ever ridden has been a hand-me-down, and I've got this money as leftover from my student loans, so this bike will have to last me a long time, and I put a lot of miles on my bikes simply because I use my bike for commuting, racing and long distance travel.

As far as quality goes, the two frames are absolutely equal. Geometry, colors and logos are the only real difference.

If you're not sure, pick based on the LBS you like more or the color you like more. That's what it's really about.

What's with you and dog snot? This isn't the first time you've used that expression.

Do I sense a "bestial" calling?

Both are good bikes for the money. I looked at both of them before buying my Cannondale. The Giant was very comfortable and the Trek...well I did not get to ride but I would have been fine owning either one but I did not like the shops that sold them, hence my reason for buying a Cannondale. Both are spec'd pretty much the same so you really don't have much to quibble over there, especially if you want to "upgrade" to SRAM later on. I DO know that both the Trek and the Giant are 2 damned nice looking bikes, especially the Trek in orange, white and black.

Cheers,

Brian J.
