While many focus on the best bike that can be purchased for $1,500, as a married man of 27 years, I am fascinated on the dynamic of arriving at the $1,500 limit. "My wife and I have set a $1,500 limit ..." To me, this clearly means the OP had a limit of $6,000 for his road bike, while his wife had a limit of $500 in mind, and they "compromised" at $1,500. Actually OP, you did pretty well ...

Yeah, unfortunately they only go up to 58. It'd be awesome though.
Close, but not quite. I had set a budget of $2500, she doesn't ride but wants to. She said, "what if, instead of you taking $2500 from your money for one bike, we take $2500 from our money, get you a $1500 bike, me a $500 bike, and get upgrades/locks and lights with the other $500?" Did I mention that she suggested we get married in my favorite comic book store? Yeah, she isn't too bad.

At $1,500 you can not beat a Caad 10. It is probably the best Alm bike frame. I purchased a Caad 10 105 for $1,200 last December for a friend and took it for a short ride; it is almost as nice as my $5,000 Cervelo. For $1,500 you probably can get a Caad Rivial. But I would spend the extra cash on pedals and shoes.
