being half way through a long ride and happening across the smell of family bbq'ing something delicious!
As a driver... cyclists who filter up the right at a stop lights and signs. I give cyclists a huge berth when passing them, but when they squeak up the left and side at a stop light sign, I don't give those f@ckers a millimeter more than the room they used to squeak in. |
Alto saxophones. Particularly on lead in some smooth jazz crap. I'm looking at you, Kenny G.

So it's YOU who keeps brushing past my elbow after the Eglinton/Mt Pleasant stoplight! As a driver I have no problem with cyclists moving up on the inside at a stoplight - unless they try to do that as I'm turning right with lots of advance signal - that often happens and I always check my inside mirror. It's just a matter of the cyclist taking advantage of a smaller footprint and greater manoevreabilty On the left at a stopsign is differerent - a more fluid situation and would usually stay in line. As a cyclist at the lineup for a red light I move up carefully on the right and stop just behind the first car - just to make sure the driver who might right hook me can see me. Otherwise it can often take several lights to get through and I don't see why a cyclist should have to dutifully stay in line when there's lots of space to get through safely and you can get away without delaying anyone by more than a millisecond. My peeve is cyclists who place responsibility for their safety on everyone but themselves - dark clothing, no lights, wrong way on a one way street, unpredicable behaviour, no evidence that they are aware of their surroundings. |
there have been threads about this, but i really don't like when someone is on my wheel and they don't give me any signal that they are there.

I have no pet peeve. I'm just thankful for that I have a bike, a little time and wonderful places/roads to ride (both for fun and commute) where I live.

You're joking, right?
In town, I like the cars up close -- I'm constantly signaling to share my space but many want to give me the same kind of space I'd get in the sticks. If they're paying attention, I have no safety concerns. The margins you cut others are what you request for yourself. Any cyclist who passes close to cars and then feels threatened by motorists who grant the same space is simply an idiot. |

Passing other Vehicles Section 148(5) requires drivers of vehicles (including cyclists) to overtake on the left. Section 150 permits however passing on the right if there is sufficient width for two or more lines of vehicles. Presumably if a lane is wide enough for a line of cars and a line of bicycles then cyclists may pass on the right. Unless you live in a city of several million people with no mass transit to speak of you wouldn't understand the traffic chaos that is Toronto. It takes me almost an hour to drive 25km from my office to my home. I share the road all the time. If I pass you while you're on a bike, I will gladly wait behind you for safe time to pass and give you the full lane. But I refuse to play a leap frog game with a cyclist at every light because they refuse to follow the rules and share the road. When I'm on my bike and coming to a stop light, I take the lane and wait behind the last stopped vehicle. No conflict and traffic knows exactly where I am and what I'm doing. I consider myself an astute student of the unspoken word. By filtering up the right, you told me a) six inches is more than adequete space for me to pass you. b) you're not concerned about your safety and I shouldn't be either. |

I beg your pardon? Passing on the right is illegal everywhere in Ontario except...

You're using your car as a weapon to bully someone who did something you don't like. It's illegal, yea, so what? Are you a cop? Do you threaten drivers who roll through stop signs too? Do you cut off or tailgate motorists who cut in front of you? |

It's really quite simple -- treat others with respect and consideration, and they'll reciprocate the vast, vast majority of the time. Passing a line that you can't keep behind you only makes enemies and slows everyone down. People who want lots of space should just take the lane and hold a spot like a car. Giving someone inches of clearance, getting in their way (possibly making them and those behind miss a light cycle they would have caught) and expecting them to respond by giving you feet is just delusional. |

There's no comparison between passing on the inside of a line of stopped vehicles (I would usually be about 2 feet away) at 10 mph and leaving a bike in your wake at 30 or 40mph with a six inch space. Maybe your angst has more to do with being stuck in traffic and seeing somebody moving through it more efficiently than you are. Certainly no excuse to put somebody in danger.
Selective morality is rampant here! Cyclist can do no wrong nor are they responsible for themselves and motorists can do no right. |

With all due respect, I don't think you understand the term bullying. If one puts themselves in predicament and I don't react in a manner that mitigates their risk... I'm afraid that not bullying by any stretch of the term. A laissez faire attitude about their safety and comfort zone perhaps. It's not my responsibility to run interference for Darwin Nominees.
Lol if only I could drive home from work at 40mph. It's a good day when my speedometer goes over 30kph. Selective morality is rampant here! Cyclist can do no wrong nor are they responsible for themselves and motorists can do no right. Your last sentence is hilariously ironic, by the way. |
