I ate beets for the first time recently. I didn't think it was all that bad.

I have to thank whoever posted the OK GO video awhile back. I now have their 2 CDs, and they have given me something nice for my post-Cake epoch. I think it was Mr. rjones28 or Mr. Moe LesterofPuppets.

Do you mind if I make a few suggestions?

o Crash diets are not a good idea. You can only maintain them short term, then you're back where you started, or worse.

o You need to establish a reasonable meal routine, featuring lots of good stuff and little or no bad stuff.

o The bad stuff is sugar, salt, trans fat, fried foods, and all the other chemical crap they put in processed food to make it taste good and extend shelf life. If you're going to zero-out anything, zero-out fast foods - they contain ALL of the above bad things.

o You need to take the time to cook fresh, healthy meals, not stuff out of the box, can, or frozen container. That's a tough change for many busy Americans . . . that's a biggie!

o Learn to cook, it's not that hard. Start with simple stuff like baked or broiled chicken, broiled steak, broiled pork chops, or baked or broiled fish. Still very tasty but WAY healthier than fried foods. Fried foods are VERY bad for you. Fresh vegetables are great, but frozen will do.

o Cut out soda completely - it's sugar water with chemical flavoring and contains no health benefits whatsoever! I suspect the iced tea is sugared as well - no good! Learn to love water with your meals.

o Sugar with those cheerios? - No good! Use as little sugar as possible.

o You didn't mention between-meal snacks. I'm suspicious. You know what's coming next, right. Yeah, you gotta get a handle on those and minimize them. They're tough to eliminate altogether! Try switching to an apple or other fruit, maybe some nuts. Reduce the chips and other junk - they say some are better than others, but that's a research project all in itself.

These are the basics. If you can adhere to much of the above, most people should start seeing results in a month or less. It's not easy to make lifestyle changes, but nothing worthwhile comes easy.

not going to disagree with you Bill.
I have made 90% of the changes you recommended. I haven't had a potato chip in a couple of months. I snack on baby carrots, if at all. I haven't had fast food in years. I used to do service repair work for most of the big names, if you had any idea what I have seen......
Here are the differences. I will allow some sugar. A bit of salt, here and there. The key is moderation.
For instance, I just had a pork chop, with my vegetables. It was fantastic, and yes, I baked it myself.
I can cook a bit, Im learning more. My plan is to get to the weight I want as I make changes to my diet and lifestyle. This way I have some positive reinforcement along the way. So far its working pretty well.
I am losing weight, Thats the key. After that it will be a matter of maintenance, and life style change. I would love to get back down to 200 #, I think I can do it.

So, yeah, as plans go, it may not be the best one, but its the only plan I have.

Criss-cross intervals on the trainer are like endorphin shooters.

We're off to an all-you-can-eat buffet with my in-laws (who are supposed to be paying, but won't, seeing we have been freeloading for the past month).

It will be a huge test of willpower.

And I will fail.

Life is good.

coasting 01-09-13 09:07 PM

i love buffet. i have no self control.

We know. Maybe it would help if you didn't watch food videos everyday.

I totally agree. It's impossible and unreasonable to eliminate all sugar and salt from your diet. So long as you're mindful of it you'll be ok.

Sounds like you're in a good place overall, keep up the good work.

i look great in the mirror this morning.

I prefer gargling.

You know what will really help a lot? Ans: these apps for tracking your caloric intake. There are a bunch of them but I used the one called Lose It!

On a daily basis you track every frikkin thing that crosses your lips, and on a daily or weekly basis you compare your intake against the "norm" intake. I'm a meticulous, number-crunching kind of guy by nature so I found it fun and easy to keep it up. It works like magic . . . once you have a picture of what you're doing wrong you know where to focus your efforts. It also allows you to subtract daily calories burned when you exercise.

I love it, works great! It's like having your own personal trainer in your pocket.

I need my appendix out, I need to find somebody with a knife! :)

Just about every year somebody dies here because somebody else didn't tie a knot right, or know how to set up an anchor, or belayed them without enough rope, etc. Climbing is awesome and fun but if you are a newbie, be sure to go with somebody who knows what they are doing.

But anyway, screw that, when you visit your son go for a spectacular bike ride! It's world class cycling around here.
