Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycle Computer Help

I'd like to purchase a Wireless Cycle Computer that measures Cadence.

I've short-listed a few computers, and I wanted to ask the Forum for their advice/own experiences.

I expect that the usability of each will be similar?

Specialized Speedzone Sport Wireless Cadence Computer
£29.99 ($47.20 US)

Cannondale IQ400 Dual Wireless 18 Function w/ Cadence
£40.00 ($63 US)

Velomann V.1.16C Speedstar 16 Function Wireless Cycle Computer Cadence
£44.99 ($70.80 US)

BC1609 STS Wireless Cycle Computer
£47.50 ($74.80 US)

Thank you for any help!

Considering the relative product reputation, price, reliability, ease-of-use/installation, which would you purchase?

I had the Sigma BC1609, but it wasn't great: lights interfered with wireless signal and cadence sensor stopped working. Give yourself a treat and get a Garmin Edge 500. Motorola ANT+ speed/cadence sensor is £19.99 from Evans right now. Add a HR strap or even a power meter later. Upload to Strava or Garmin Connect, program workouts for training, upload courses from RideWithGPS or Bikeroutetoaster, race against a virtual partner, ... Easily the best cycling accessory I've ever bought and so much more than these other computers.

How do you mean exactly? The back-light from the computer-screen interfered? Or a separate light you had fixed to your bike?

Of course, it'd be nice to purchase a Garmin, but it's way above my price-range!

At night, EM interference from my front light would disrupt the wireless signal to the computer so speed and cadence would occassionally display as zero. Seemingly a common problem with analog wireless. ANT+ is digital so no such problem with Garmin. Nice big display on the Sigma though, but you can't keep its backlight on permanently.

Don't buy one of the above and save up!

Cateye Strada on your budget, or save for a Garmin.

I second the Cateye Strada Double Wireless. I have one and it works great. It's digital and not analog so there is no interference like what you get with analog wireless. I bought mine at a LBS for $89.00 USD.

I also vote for the Cateye. It works well and does what's needed. Having said that, I'm gonna be saving for a Garmin to go on my new bike.
