So, we awoke to sounds of a snow blower - one of our neighbors was kind enough to clear our long (120' or so) sidewalk of about 8-10" of light, fluffy snow. An hour later, a plow came by at high speed and sprayed out a wide plume, covering the sidewalk in 12" of heavy, gritty snow from the street. Thanks for not letting me skip a workout, DoT.

Asshats.

It will sell a lot of units, I just wonder if it'll reach that critical mass tipping point where it becomes a must-have rather than a curiosity. I do think that it would be a cool toy, at the right price-point, but I'm sure that Apple's price point will be higher than I'm willing (they can't subsidy these things like they can with the phones).

It's a side show. The future remains in computing, mostly mobile, and that includes the phones. Like I said the TV won't be a huge product because unless they can re-invent the distribution model like they did in music, where is it really going? I doubt even Mr. Jobs could have pulled that one off in the end. Apple should start deploying that massive cash by acquiring companies like Twitter, which they could easily do.

what is a must carry object...wallet/purse and keys then phone, then tablet. nothing else.

we are done then :)

Nonsense.

I bought a wristband for my iPod Nano.

I have never worn it.
Wait, I'm lying, I think I wore it once for a "run" and then promptly lost it and didn't miss it.

Apple needs to find another new or underutilized piece of tech and reinvent it... or just improve on their existing product. This business of trying to reinvent well established tech is a terrible direction. IMHO.

Back to frameset shopping. This would be so much easier if the Fuji Altamira didn't have to have that BB86 bottom bracket. :o

On this, we agree.

The future of the retail market is in selling people s**t they do not need, like watches and glasses, but without the nerds at the back of the data center who keep the company going, watches and glasses are meaningless. Servers and Cloud tech is where its at. AAPL needs something to fall back on besides staying ahead of the other guys with gadgets, who incidentally, have caught up. Litigation is the tip of AAPL's spear now, and unlike Google, they don't have a search engine to fall back on, or skin in any other significant part of the market. GOOG is at least in the same realm as AAPL re: mobile devices, and not a small player at all.

Given the breadth of product line, I'll take Samsung or Google over top-heavy APPL any day. When AAPL starts spending, it will balance things out, but Cook is on shaky ground right now.

Ugh...that was fast. Our beloved cat, Gianni, threw up a bunch of blood last night and after all night at the ER vet, we had to put him down this morning. RIP Gianni. :(

Having worked significantly with home automation, I can see that there's a lot of room for a proliferation of networked smart devices (such as the Nest, which was made by an Apple alumnus). As devices become easier to use together, stalwarts like Crestron, with their rather high price points, are going to see sales eroded by these devices.

I think that mobile will continue to be big, but I'm still interested to see what the wearable stuff will bring. My gut on the watch is that it'll only be successful as an accessory to a phone at a low (~$200) price point. If it the price is any higher, I think that it needs to be a phone replacement rather than an accessory if it's going to see some traction.

dalava 03-05-13 08:44 AM

The touch-screen phone with the form factor of iPhone/Galaxy/new BB has peaked. All they can add to it now are more pixels, better processors, longer battery life; good stuff, but only incremental. One of these guys, AAPL, GOOG or Samsung will, I predict, in the next two years, come out with a new form factor (and it's not a wrist watch). I don't know what it may be, but it will probably be something "why didn't I think of that" obvious (like "Bang with Friends" app on Facebook).

So sorry for your loss. Although it was probably better for your Gianni that he didn't suffer a long illness, those unexpected losses are so much more difficult for the survivors.

Asshats.

That's always my first reaction... but they're just doing their jobs, and I can't really fault them for that... no matter how infuriating.

On the bright side, at least you only have 12" of slush to clear, and not 10" of snow with 12" of slush on top of it?

I'm sure it pisses off people who use the path, but we sort of have a sidewalk/bike path* in front of the house, but there are no ordinances requiring us to clear it. The village doesn't even come and clear the walk along the empty lot next to us. I'll clear it once in a while since our mailbox is at the end of it, but once the plows start chucking slush and ice on it, I say forget it.

*it's not like a traditional sidewalk, it's a continuation of the shoulder where there is technically a bike route, but there's a curb with no grassy part, and it's only in front of the 2 lots next to the turn lane for the intersection. Also, it's a terrible bike route, as it only goes for about 2 miles, and the wider shoulder is only on one side, so cyclists use the other side going the correct direction anyway.

Got two of them Nests, and like them a lot. If they can get them down to $100-150 price point...

MS and Google are in a good positions in this regard, but I think that there needs to be major infrastructure overhaul (specifically in the US) before there can be a big move to the cloud (there's talk of some online-only capability with the products like the PS4 - maybe it'll fly in Japan and parts of Europe, but I think it's a mistake here). Problem is, what's the incentive for this undertaking as far as the ISPs (that are entrenched and, for the large part, monopolies) are concerned? It'll be slow-going without a major shake-up.

My issue is two-fold:

* they did nothing all night, letting it accumulate
* if the plow would have come by at a reasonable speed, it would have formed a typical snowbank, leaving the walkway clear. Instead, it flew by, creating a low (<18") but wide (>7') pile.

dalava 03-05-13 08:56 AM

Snow comes east this evening. Looking at a week of salt/grime on the road.
