Yeah, I think the 2 quakes are from the same plate. Lately it seems like 2 plates shift...then things settle for a couple of months...then like about 2,000mi in any direction from the last quake is "up for grabs".
Sounds like the Aussies are safe now for awhile. |

It was 2 quakes from two plates colliding. BBC said it was the India plate and the Burma plate. They said the impact from the two plates were such that India plate fell 10 meters lower than the Burma plate.
Aussies are safe now, but who knows what that shift in plates will do to that area of the world? Not like everyone ought to take cover, but there have to be some repercussion we can only imagine. Koffee |
One thing's certain...I'm say'n my prayers 2nite :D
|
2days ? before this one hit we had a shake of 8.5 centred about 850Ks off our west coast , no tidal waves but it was felt in our South Island ,they seem to come in clusters ,although they deny that there is a connection every time !
|
Well, they'll deny it until the tsunami hits them. :( I guess they don't want to panick people?
Why deny when you can acknowledge the possibility and prepare for it? I really hope they have a better way to prepare after this, especially in light of the findings about how the earthquake being so strong it briefly knocked the earth off its axis and also shifted many of the islands over about 20 feet. That is terrifying to even think about. Still haven't heard from any of my Indonesian and Singaporean friends. I'm saying lots of prayers... Koffee |
I try not to worry about those things I cannot control.

But yeah, back to the current road cycling topic of choice, damn sad events. In this mornings Telegraph they had a pictorial of a poor local getting taken away. JUst looked like he was going for a float down some rapids like we used to do every summer in our youth. The last shot of him was taken from only a couple of meters above him. But then they say he was found later a km inland dead. Poor bastid. Best thing about living in Bx. Unless we drinking to much grog and doin stupid ****, shot of a meteor landing on our asiz, we're sweet as a nut here. |

I was walking down a little laneway when the Newcastle earthquake hit (5.6) and it felt like walking on a boat deck as it pitched and rolled. Some friends of my sister were in a pub (yes, at 10:28am! the sods) and they watched a surface 'wave' roll down the street. A few people said that their cars shifted a few feet sideways. So it would probably feel like riding a bike on a little yacht in rough seas followed by a sudden and unintentional meeting with the ground. |

http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/bulletin/neic_slav_ts.html http://www.theage.com.au/articles/20...&oneclick=true There are two that can start you off. And watch BBC News. They are very good with reporting. *sigh* I haven't heard from any of my Indonesian friends. I've heard from my Singaporean friends. I guess they were completely shielded from the tsunami because they're blocked by Sumatra and Thailand. But we're all emailing each other and telling our Indonesian friends to contact someone when and if they get the chance. I'm just worried in the meantime. :( Koffee |
I have friends who work dive operations in ****et, haven't heard from them
or from other mutual friends in S.A.so I'm a bit concerned. Initially I was worried bout my friends in Kapalai (about 20k from Sipidan) but I understand that part of Malaysia was ok (blocked by Indonesia, penisular Malaysia and Borneo). Cripes the missus and I were talking bout a dive trip to SE asia for the Holidays, work got in the way otherwise I'd have first hand experience with this one (we were talking about Phiphi (sp?) Island or possibly Maldives. Marty |
a couple of Indonsian islands have been moved 36 metres!!
Kind of makes you think to make the most of time you have..... |
Shocking at first but that's how India's land mass got where it is today!

and it's still moving....aren't the Himalayas still rising at a few cms a year? |
All friends accounted for in Indonesia, although I feel terribly for them, because friends and relatives of theirs were affected- missing, presumed dead, and some made it.

Koffee [edit] Well, if only I typed a bit faster, this wouldn't be so awkward. |
Just getting this a bit back on track cycling-wise... Anyone have some decent rides planned in the New Year?
Mine are: Giro Tasmania 1000, 2-3-4 January. 75 hour time limit. Ride around Tasmania. Cascade 1200 in Seattle in mid-June. 1200km in 90 hours. but a slightly different format with enforced overnight stops. Gold Rush Randonnee, somewhere in California, in mid-July. 1200km in 90 hours in normal randonnee format. Plus various other shorter randonnees (mainly to qualify for GRR). |
