Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Are there any bikes out there that are Campagnolo Centaur equipped for around $3000?

I ask because I live in a town of only two bikeshops where one stocks Giant and the other Avanti. I had considered getting the 2005 TCR 1 alloy with Ultegra 10spd, but I'd like to know what other bikes there are that I should consider.

I'll ask this one again while it's quiet:

G'day,

try https://www.probikekit.com/ but don't buy any of the 'prorace' homebrand stuff...its crap. They occaisionally have some red hot deals on nalini stuff. I've ordered from them a few times & never had any trouble. If you keep your order under about $200 customs don't worry you for duty either.....locally, I love my Assos stuff...bloody expensive though, but does seem to last longer than most...the shop off Clarendon st, (opposite Coles), tell the dude your an Audax member (but forgot your card) for another 10% off. I like 'cannibal' gear as well & nalini if you can get it at a reasonable price.....Le knicks sometimes has some cheap stuff....theres a joint opposite the brighton yacht club I've been meaning to check out too......blah blah blah

I was amazing lucky when that happened. I was only going about 15kmh, but I was off the seat, so I still managed to take off a lot of skin.

It was a sh1tty old Mavic crank (175mm) -- at least 15 years old, that I bought second hand. It was also built very thin, like the old Camags.

At the time, I was commuting to RMIT on a cheap bike that had a horrible seat, so I spent half the time coasting off the saddle, just like a MTB rider would ride down-hill, which apparently puts heaps of pressure on the cranks.

So basically, they were crap old cranks that I gave a hammering.

I was totally paranoid about getting out of the seat for about a month.

Bikes: Scapin EOS7 sloping, 10v Record, Ksyriums

I'm here.....busy day....I nearly couldn't cope!!!

Shorts-Assos. Definitely. But if you don't want to spend top dollar or wear shop gear and have to buy locally, go see Max at Le Knicks, I reckon.

Bikes: Thylacines...only Thylacines.

I've snapped a crank before - A Syncros Revolution. I was on my singlespeed going up this hill that was just barely ridable, and I thought 'Gee, it would suck if these cranks broke' then WHAMMO - pedal and crankarm attached to foot, foot is on the ground.

Warwick cries. Warwick rides one legged all the way home.

Anyway, Hitcho, if you're still arround, can I borrow your Arione at lunchtime tomorrow?

05 Cannondale R900's are Centaur equiped for just a tad over that price (I was quoted $3200 without trying to haggle the tight buggers here locally)

Exactly. I had to ride my bike home like it was a skateboard: one leg on, the other scooting along the ground.

I subscribe too and still waiting. I was hoping to win the Cannondale Six13 for subscribing, didnt happen.

Great magazine though, I started out reading Bicycling Australia until I spotted Ride on another newstand and Ride is by far a better read.

'Ride' is a heap better mag......bicycling Aus has 1 page of content to every 3 pages of ads......whilst i like reading bike ads...they're gunna have to do a whole lot better before I buy it again......hmm....a 6-13 for subscribing?....if I win I'll sell it to ya on the cheap!....saw my first 05 'Look' KG486 today.......it pains me to say it...but the new red & silver colour scheme looks even better than my blue one....ahhh well, I'll start saving the pennies & sucking up the 'she who must be obeyed'

Tephra - Translation : "What a Super Prodigy would be called if it wasn't shît"

Mate, I've spent all day in the office waiting for - 1) Dudes from some bike shop in Qld ( They didn't show ), 2) My new mobile phone coz this one is shagged ( Didn't show ), customer to acknowledge receipt of his new fixie frame ( did show ). Here's pix - https://www.thylacinecycles.com/gallery/album03

What a dilemna. Go for a ride and blow off some steam, or go buy some beer. Oh the humanity.

Urban fixed gear. I do custom, so sometimes I resent even having model names, coz they seem a bit pointless. This one is called the 'Just1Fix', however.

It's Columbus Zona, which is Columbus' second tier steel. Done a few frames in Zona, but only one with this front end - it uses the funky 'Megatube' shaped top and down tubes.

I'm not a massive fan, but I think they look great on a track/fixie frame.

Bikes: how long have you got?

g'day,

just back from the bike show......1st impressions...mmmm....carbon!....seems everone is on the carbon bandwagon these days....saw the new Look 486's the 585, (colour coded seat posts!) the new Mavic Cosmics....the only set of 'Keo' titanuim pedals in the country. Look made my missus cry when I realised the new HSC5 fork is only available in the 05 colours...so If i want to upgrade the fork, the only way it'll match the bike is If I buy an 05 frame as well!! ....its a hard job but somebodies gotta do it!.......saw the Cervelo R2.5...quite nice, but the 'lugged' look doesn't really do it for me.....hands up all who reckon the new forks on the PInarello's are the ugliest thing in cycling!...nice frames though....Ok Hitchy's review time

Best looking thing in Carbon (excluding the 486) Leggera (can't remember the model name)...absolutely superb...natural carbon...full record carbon...zipp 404's ....no change outta $10k though.

Biggest Stand:...the Lance mob...more bikes, more carbon...looks like the 5200 & 5900 etc have morphed into compact frames called 5.5 & 5.9's.....The madone now has various guises as well....in case you missed it....some bloke called Lance's picture was plastered everywhere...what are they gunna do when he retires?

Interesting Stands: Shimano, have the Ultegra 10 out now...doesn't appear to many cosmetic changes to the U9 from years gone by.

Giant: some interesting changes to the TCR range (more later)
Pearl Izumi: special mention cos they sold me 3 pairs of socks for $30 (RRP $75)

OK...bikes for Badsac to look out for: Orbea have an interesting new carbon frame called an 'Onix'......centaur, Ksyriums $4.7 RRP but will deal...very nice. The guy tells me its made in Taiwan to compete price wise with Giant & to give Trek the *****s..worth a look

Scott C1 team.....$3.7 K with 105....ksyriums.....very very smick looking frame

Giant had something called a TCR 'Euro'...centaur & Ksyriums for around the same price. Guy tells me the lateral stiffness has improved markedly over the 04 frames & the 'twitchiness' in the front end has been resolved....looks very nice

Avanti had some nice looking carbon/ alu melds...priced under $4K, depending what gruppo you wanted...

notable absentees from this years show: Bianchi, colnago, Scapin, & anything in steel (not a smelly super prodigy in sight!)...all up...no real 'wallet opening',mouth dropping new equipment or deals....but very nice anyway thank you very much!.....Now...how do i prize $5K from 'she who must be obeyed ' for a new 486 frame?
