Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, dun look too bad. Bit of a clearing shower. There's more cloud coming in behind it, but it might not bring much rain. Should get a result. With moisture on the pitch it should only take the pie-chucker a few overs to mop up.

I'm sure now that the AU$ is so high, we'll see a drop in prices. Not. You guys would make fun of my brother and his shiny bike, hey? That's fine. We only went with Ti for the tandem because that's what the builder uses. It's got couplers like S&S makes so we can take it apart when we travel. If the builder worked in steel, we would have gotten that instead. I'm just too big for a skinny tire road bike on Newcastle's poor roads. I hope you guys don't me having a sticky at this forum.
Good idea getting the S&S Coplers on that tandem. Can you imagine paying freight on it without them? Holy hell that would hurt. What brand did you get? I bet it cost you an absolute packet.

Man, I reckon retail, especially high end retail is dead. The only thing I buy locally is tubes on the rare occasion I get a flat, although I guess thats because I have a little bike company and can buy most things direct so I can avoid excessive levels of the chain of distribution. Every 'consumer' I speak to buys most of their high end stuff via US mailorder. The bottom line is, is that if you only have a 5% chance that you'll require a warranty, then why pay double the US price for the privalige of buying locally? It's a calculated risk.

They're still making a killing off the back of all the yuppies having a mid life crisis. Most bikes over $3K are sold to middle aged guys with fat wallets and no brains. Oh *****, that's us guys.

....HEY.....I resemble that remark!......seriously, all a highend bike means to me is that I've got (had) way to much money to spend. Doesn't mean crap when the 'flag' drops...actually, & I'm sure others feel the same about me & the 486, I get a perverse joy in trying to 'stick it' to every bloke I see on a C50 Ltd edition or a Dogma Ego.......

I used a lot of parts that we had lying around, and had the frame made overseas by a custom builder. All up, I don't think we've spent more than AU$9k, but that includes about $1,000 in changes once it was rideable. Titanium brake rotors (203mm) look cool, but are a disaster. Unless you like replacing pads and rotors every 220k, at about $150 an end.

We started a little internet shop, and ran into the same story with nearly every company. They have their exclusive distributor, who won't sell to us as we don't have a physical location (um, my ass is on a chair, that's my location!). So now my bro walks into his LBS (Supergo is 2 minutes away) and orders whatever we want. The shop I used to buy from sells to me with about 5% markup. They even sent me the dealer's catalog! By the time shipping is paid, it's still less than half what the LBS here pays, so it works out well. All we have right now is some odd bits, because there's some holiday next month, and my kids are expecting presents, but early 2005, we'll be ordering up some goods. In the meantime, we also accept special orders. Not a sales pitch, sorry. I'd sell something at my cost just to stick it to the distributors that are jacking up the prices, and keep more bikes on the road. Oh, in case you guys want to know where to get the best prices, and to show I'm not trying to sell anything, try www.qbike.com. It will locate the best price in the states, nearly every time. Oh, Aussie "wimmin" are way better than American women. Hurts to say it, but it's true.

There isn't any brand, that's why. It's an OEM supplier to bike companies, we went straight to the manufacturer. Got me into a heap of trouble with one of their customers too. But it was the only way we could spec the frame exactly as we wanted it. They sent a CAD drawing to us for our approval, we made some changes and sent them back until it was exactly what we wanted. That's why there's no brand. Do you know of a manufacturer that makes Ti tandem MTB's? I know they build for Aerolite in Canada, but I don't know who else.

I'm underwhelmed by such a dubious induction. I will certainly try my best to contribute as little meaningful commentary as possible, while at the same time upholding your very high ***** stirring standards. Thank you all who couldn't be bothered, that means a great deal.
