The folks in Melbourne do have it too good when it comes to bicycle shops. Is Bikeland a local shop for anyone here?

Gawd, even I bought one today, and I live in the boonies. :p

I can't believe how much cr4p is in cycling magazines. All adds. Which is strange considering you can't buy any ***** anywhere so I don't know why they're advertising. Still I like the adds. Should have bought one of these ages ago. Good for the learnin.

You're right Hitchy, that is a nice spread of bikes Orbea's got in there. I wonder what would be better? And Orbea Vento with Veloce and Campy Vento's for 3.1k, or a Cannondale R900 with Veloce and Gimpy Parades for 3.2? Orbea might ride better, but Cannondale would be lighter. Guess ride would take precedent over weight for me out here.

Bizzare thing from that Orbea catalouge. 2 identical frames, one kitted out with a Campy component set and wheels, the other with Shimano 105 and R500 wheels. The Shimano is 0.27 kg lighter and $600 cheaper. Why (besides it looks better and has 1 extra cog) would you go for the campy stuff?

SJP 11-04-04 06:04 AM

Hey badsac,
Have you thought about the LeMond Alpe d'Huez.....or any other LeMond bikes. From memory they were good value.
If you have my apologies for briniging it up again.

Yeah, I have. I was kinda looking at the Chambery because it was within my budget (one model above the Alpe d'Huez). But the Alpe d'Huez is the same frame with 105 components so I'd say I'd be able to get one of those no worries. I like the carbon rear triangle on this years bike. So that might have to be the go. Just save some money and get a 105 series bike. I'm sure that would be well good enough for me.

No worries about asking any questions about what I've been looking at. I'd hate to think I was missing something because I'm a noob fool. So fire em at me. ;)

I thought the 2004 Alpe d'Huez came with the Ultegra Gruppo......and the Tourmalet came with 105 with Ultegra rear derailleur for around $2000.

badsac 11-04-04 06:31 AM

Probably did. For 05 though, the Tormalet has stayed the same with 105 and the same all Aluminium frame. The Alpe D'Huez and Chambery have a better Aluminium frame with carbon seat and chain stays. Alpe has 105 this year and Chambery has Ultegra 10. Look like very nice bikes if you're into the simple asthetics.

SJP 11-04-04 06:51 AM

Do you like the look of the Chambery? I cant decide whether I like it or not.

Yeah, I like it. I'd prefer it to have a traditional top tube'd frame, but you can't have everything. I like the plain silver with red decals. Very clean looking bike. I don't know why they didn't put red bar tape on it like the put blue on the Alpe D'Huez. Might have spiced it up a bit. I thought it might be because it would look to garish. But a number of Orbea's have red bar tape and I think it looks sweet. Remember I'm a noob though. That might be the biggest fashion faux par ever. ;)

Not really; he's in Warragul, which is about 100km south east of Melbourne.

Why do you ask?

You been checking out his web site?

Looks like he's taken off his prices, maybe coz they were frightening too many people to death.
VERY expensive :)

G'day,

anyone seen the eddy Merkx bikes in this months 'ride'......what a piece of crap by todays standards!....wonder how good eddy'd be on me 486?.....(although judging by the latest photo's of him I dunno if he could 'swing a leg'...lol). I can't believe they'd just drill holes in EVERYTHING to make 'em lighter......musta been able to ride a bit i reckon. marc Sherriff's page is a hoot too! (with apologies to Scoz who probably still hasn't got his!)

Reminds me of the USSR and DDR riders from the 80s whipping everyone on 12kg Colnagos and Masis.

...actually, weight wise the road bike in the mag was only 9kg odd.....pretty fair i woulda thought for 30 years ago & made outta 531 steel.....but the components were absolute crap compared to todays...the writer makes some comment about the braking system being 'downright dangerous'....lol...They've got Eddy's track bike that he set the hour record on.....5.7kg....but more holes drilled in it than swiss cheese....Mr colnago was reportedly very worried that the thing was just gunna 'fold' up under eddy's power!

Hmmmmm...might have to pop down to Chaddy and get meself a copy.

TGIF, fellas.

I went for a ride yesterday, can you believe how stoooooopid I was? Felt really good, hammered into Mordy, so I thought I'd soldier on to Franger.

Rained ALLTHE WAY HOME.

I was so cold, I couldn't feel my fingers by the time I hit the city. 40kms of a 100km ride in the rain? I don't recommend it. The only thing that saved me was my Swobo wool jersey. Never thought I'd say it, but thank god for sheep.
