Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is where a very loud hub comes in handy... a bit of coasting / backpedaling lets people and wildlife know I'm there.

See poss 41 and 42 above. I am going to dress up in full kit, get on my bike, get up to speed then shove my frame pump in my front wheel as an act of contrition and penance.

Agreed. And when I'm solo I'll take glancing looks over my shoulder every once in a while; I hate being surprised. Also, whenever I plan to turn or even move over to avoid a pothole or debris, I will also glance over my shoulder in the direction I intend to move.

As far as people yelling "stopping": on La Grange club rides, which can get as many as a 100 riders, you will ALWAYS here people yelling out, "stopping," as they brake. I'm not a huge fan of removing hands from the bars under breaking to signal a stop, especially on rough roads. When people do this in front of me (signal they're stopping with their hand) I'll say "got it, got it" so they'll get that hand back on their bars. If it's a slow stop, the rider behind should be attentive enough to know the rider(s) in front are slowing to a stop.

Is there any biking etiquette I should now about? I've noticed that people passing me say "on your left" - for reasons that are obvious.
Are there other "unspoken rules" I should know about so I don't piss any one off?
I kind of like the "Golden Rule". It's applicable to most situations in our lives. Also, when passing someone, unless on a confined path, I don't say "on your left", but almost always give at least five feet and a small wave after passing.

There has been a fair amount of bandwidth wasted on the 'waving at other cyclists' concept and whether you should be butt-hurt if they don't wave back.

Trust me on this, it's situational.

Exactly. Who doesn't like feelin' the thrill of the chase?
I still have my copy I bought in '88.
I especially like the part where Stieda says to check for wind direction by looking at the grass and leaves on trees.

That's actually incredibly good advice. Hills you can see coming at you, wind is trickier.
