You'd never get anywhere near him. When he's been on the ride before he has his entourage, charity VIPs from various organizations who have given him enough money for "cancer research" who get to chum up with him, and then all the news people who follow his group around. At the end of that day's ride he gets his own little podium and stage where he does some spiel thanking everyone for their money, saying how awesome RAGBRAI is, and how we're gonna beat cancer. Then it's a couple quick autographs/staged photo ops, etc. and he gets on his bus and the sheep just stand in front of it and take pictures. Sad, really.
This year won't be much different, if not worse. He'll be swamped by news people and gawkers.

If there are two guys on bicycles and a telephone pole, it's a race.

Oh it's fun, don't get me wrong, but it's still dumb. I just meant that it's not bike-centric anymore. The best way for me to describe it is to think of the Sturgis rally. Instead of actual bikers, all you have now is 50 year old accountants and dentists trailering their brand new Harleys out there with the wife and kids. Isn't what it was intended to be.
Don't let me stop you from going though, you'll have a good time for sure.

Here in bumfark, we have them every 30 meters or so. Also, that's what carries the power lines in much of the county city boy.

And he'll say "Hey, everybody else on the Tour was doing it..."
And the 41'er will say "Not the jersey, the helmet, Michelob Ultra Boy! Do some commercials for a real beer!"

I can see it now: R600DuraAce goes to RAGBRAI, sees Lance, proceeds to dial it up to 400 watts.

For 2011, average age of participants was 45.5. 59% of riders were older than 45...
This will be my fifth straight year riding with my best friend from high school. We have yet to stop at a slide. Interpret that how you like. We are 39 and feel really young for the week.

It always never cease to amaze me that shame is no longer a factor in compelling good societal behaviour anymore. You would think a guy like LA can just slink back into the cesspool he came from. After lying so hard for so long and destroying (or at least ruining) many people's lives, he dare shows his face at a significant public event like RAGBRAI.
What is so sad is that Iowans would have someone like him at that ride (they should be protesting his announced attendance), as I went to college in that state for four years, and after all these years of living in a lot of places, the people in that state (collectively) are still my most favorite kind of people. Just super super nice and friendly people.
They don't need, nor should they want LA ruining their event.

I love how personally butthurt people are about a person they have never met, will likely never meet, and use carbon wheels and power meters to reach speeds almost nearing Lance sitting up with no hands eating a sandwich.
The guy wants to do a big recreational group ride with folks from his bike shop.. who gives a *&)*(*

Yeah, I have no hate for the guy. Yeah, he lied and was kind of a jerk. But, he wanted to be a bike racer more than anything. He found out that you have to dope to make it and made his decision. I disagree with his decision, but I cant really hate him for it.

I wonder how this whole thing would have unfolded if it was Jan Ullrich who won all those Tours, and LA was the bridesmaid. Would people be literally foaming at the mouth over the guy, or was it just because he was a total a-hole AND the best? Would there be as much outrage at Ullrich's 7 titles? Or because he was not this enormous egomaniac that LA is, would he still be holding his titles? Riis still has his, even though he admitted doping, AND offered to give it back!

You guys still don't understand. LA was just no ordinary doper ala Ullrich et al. What sets LA apart is the numerous people he tried to destroy, all the while knowing he was the scumbag. That takes a lot of balls for a guy who has only one ball. That for me, is why LA's name is mudd.

yeah, his behavior wasn't good. he treated some people like crap, but I don't hate him for that, or for any other reason. I really don't give an S**t how he treated them.
