Email sent to my entire family tonight:
It would appear that my Dad’s time may be measured in days at this point.
Keith and I got him into a hospital bed in the back room Monday where just
Saturday night my Dad spent time with many of us and we got a final moment
of enjoying him relatively happy and lucid. I do believe he was joyful to be home
and surrounded by so much love.
Over the past two days he is barely cognizant, since Sunday night he has been speaking
mostly in Greek, and he seems to be somewhere else. It reminds me of that poignant
scene at the end of film ‘Gladiator’ where the dying protagonist is walking through a
field of tall summer gold and you see only his hand floating through the wheat.
Maybe my Dad is in Evia in his mind now, and they speak Greek there.
Thano and Bonzo were a bright shining star of love for 40 years and their gravity
kept all of us steady in intersecting orbits, blood lines and geography
notwithstanding. What I witnessed this weekend in Cresskill defines family
more profoundly than any genetics ever could, and I have never felt so blessed
or so proud to be a part of it and all of you.
I can never thank all of you enough. I love you all.

It's winding down rapidly, which would be merciful. I don't want him to hang on like this. Too much suffering. If you had a dog in this condition and you didn't euthanize him it would be considered cruelty to animals.

We got bad news. My wife has the gene mutation for familial CJD. Her variant has a 90% penetrance, meaning it’s going to kill her. What triggers the disease is unknown. Once triggered, you die fast. Her sister got to walk away.
She can either sit around and wait to die, or she can enjoy every day this green earth has to offer. We choose the latter.

I've been struggling. The bike helps. Been riding the steel SS cross bike to work. Damn that bike is fun. Heavy as hell, but smashes through everything. Got some decent snow and ice yesterday.

Yes, but the moral issues surrounding human euthanasia are more complicated than those of a dog. I know exactly how you feel. When my mom finally passed away after a long period of suffering I made it clear to many that I was thankful and happy to see her go. Sounds uncomfortable and still feels uncomfortable eight years later, but when there's no avoiding the end then it's best that it comes promptly.

@sbxx1985 Yes agreed, when one is capable one should get out and enjoy life to the fullest. I'm sorry to hear of your wife's situation, I wish you both the best and as much time as possible.
My mom otoh was 85, lying there immobile with a broken hip, suffering from complications from Alzheimers and despondent. She just had to lay there and suffer. A different situation.

Good luck to you guys. That is a difficult to imagine situation, and is probably a true test of one's philosophical and religious beliefs. There are many ways to look at the situation, and they all carry their own burdens. It is a hard hard thing.
