Strange day. A gale rolled through Santorini, apparently very rare, they only get like 10 days a year of rain. We were socked in with clouds as you can see in above photo- no blue sky whatsoever. Dust from the storm blew into the airport, allegedly partially disabling the keyboards of the check in agents, meaning that it took 5-15 min to check in every passenger. Good thing the flight was delayed 1.5 hours, lol.
I am sitting in a window seat with the middle seat empty and at the last minute a man &
his teenage daughter rush onto the plane. The girl sits next to me, the father proceeds on to sit elsewhere. She tells me it's been a crazy two days for her, her 14 year old brother got appendicitis and had to be evacuated by sea ambulance from Santorini to Crete, he had emergency surgery (and also happened to get a watermelon seed stuck in his ear, but that's a whole other thing). Then she whips out her notebook and comments that she's got to work on her screenplay. She has written a screenplay for a 2-hour stop motion film she is making, it's a sequel to Frozen. She had also designed & is hand sewing all the costumes, shows me photos of all of her costume designs on her IPhone. I hear all about the casting & which of her friends has been cast in which voice roll. I also hear all about her first date, lol. A very entertaining 45 minute flight.
Then we get to Athens and catch a cab to our hotel. Except the cab can't get to the hotel because there are 3 bus loads of police in full riot gear blocking access to the hotel, which happens to be across the street from the Parliament Bldg. Very large number of protestors marching and waving Greek flags. Cab driver doesn't know what is going on, he gets us as close as he can, then we hop out of the cab and roll our suitcases one block to the hotel, the front door of which is lined with 15 police, all in a tight row. Um, we're checking in?! we say and they let us in the building, we proceed through metal detectors into our fancy hotel.
We ask what going on at check-in- some big European economic meeting took place today & the finance minister is staying at the hotel. It's pretty late and we just want a bite to eat. Front desk recommends we try the bar on the 8th floor. So we do, and get plunked down next to a window with a great view of the Acropolis.
So there you have it, a very unusual day

....I bet under those conditions small, inhabited island prices are very attractive. Only if you have time, of course.

Not enough time for a decent bike ride today so I ran 5.4k. So there.

It rained a bit and was coldish (~60F) here so I did 50 minutes easy on the rollers. Amazing how quickly riding outdoors in less than ideal conditions loses its luster after a few weeks of decent weather.

So sad that the sun has set on the most epic waving thread.

Maybe too compressed. The density was so high it was kind of sucking material from others threads into a frightening singularity, like a black hole.
