Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just don't understand how someone can own a word, especially if it's not a new word.

Now I don't know if it only matters on fixed gear, where you are looking to disperse skid patterns, but I have read it in regards to SS'es as well.

Also, I have had excellent luck with Excess freewheels, bought through Universal Cycles. Lester pointed out that sight, and it has definitely fueled my personal cycling schwag addiction.
Re: odd number - interesting, I'll look in to it a little, but it is currently even:even

On sourcing, I'm going to make a couple calls today and see if someone has one in stock - if I can, I'd rather just get it, slap it on and be done with it rather than go without it over the weekend. If no one can help me after a few calls, I'll order online. Thanks!

It's not odd numbers but prime numbers. It's a consideration for fixed gear. Having prime numbers increases the number of skid patches.

The dogwalk find of the day. Perfectly matches the SS Beater; it's a particularly timely find because a cage was on the list for the next time I found myself at a bike shop.

I knew that part of it, but there is also a part that has to do with chain wear. On fixed gear ratio (not fixed freewheel, but fixed gear ratio), chain wear all falls on the roller units or pin link units with even number sums, and it gets balanced between them with odd numbers. It has been a lifetime since I worked with chain drives in power transmission applications, but I kind of recall that same rule in specifying power transmission systems.

Dunno, but I'm assuming that it was came off of a car-mounted bike - I can't imagine that anyone riding their bike would fail to notice the death rattle of loose metal cage.

Maybe she can teach you. Then you can make a music video of yourself playing the recorder to a music video.

I've heard people worry about that but I don't think alternating between inner/outer plate links on sprocket teeth would concern me much in a bike chain situation.

Narrow/wide chainrings where teeth are designed to take only one kind of link are even a bit of a thing now in 1x mtb land.

I agree with this. The SS takes the brain damage out of it. Set up is slightly more comfortable. It's fun, easy, and zennish, but never reaches the Zen of the Paketa and R3SL.

I haven't ridden the Paketa in a long time. That's the problem with having an A+ and A bike in the stable. But that's another story.

I've been really pleased with the psimet 50/58 powertap wheelset. Excellent wheels for the money. My guess is November, Boyd, and Rob are all similarly situated with their product. Not enough capital to develop a fancy Firestrike or Smart system, but a solid enough product that the gains per dollar are marginal for most riders.

And you get to support the small guy.

They can't. They can trademark a word for specific business purposes which are called out in the registration. So, it's legally OK for us to use "Specialized" in reference to the company (or anything else, really), but it's not legal to engage in trade using that name for bicycles, bicycle parts and whatever else is called out in Specialized's registration. It's also why Specialized can't sue the town of Roubaix.

Further, trademark owners are required to legally pursue violators or risk losing their trademark. That doesn't, however, mean that Specialized hasn't overreached on occasion.
