long rides and for recovery. Try some Perpetuem alternating with Skratch on your next long ride, most people tolerate it well (I don't. but I have trouble with lots of stuff on the bike)

and I'm pretty similar to LAJ. I eat my fruit, yogurt and granola in the morning, then make a green smoothie around 11am that I sip on the rest of the day. When I get home, I'll grill some chicken or something and eat it with a salad.
Or I eat tacos and pizza

Heathpack, you need to adopt the ls01 method of training. Forget all the scientific hoopla.
Rule #1 ) Ride your bike. A lot. When it looks like you are riding your bike to much, ride it some more. When loved ones are complaining about how much time you spend on your bike you are getting close to riding, an adequate amount. (you can never ride enough)
#2 ) Always train hard. Any time you are riding your bike you are training, so you will always ride your bike hard. Attack all hills as if they are the enemy, no matter how large or how small.
#3 ) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And in case you missed it , remember to hydrate. Also note there is water in beer.
#4 ) Adhere to the rules, ( can also be interpreted as, I am to tired to think up any more stuff)
The rules. Velominati ? The Rules

And for those of you playing the home version. I have a 94 z 28 with a living, fire breathing LS-01 that is almost fully functional. needs air conditioning and some further tuning of the pcm. You wanna talk about hold on to your hat? Yikes! its jaw dropping the difference from the LT-01 to the LS-01. Like it has an extra 4 cylinders. I cant believe some people will put a tubo on this engine. I would need a spatula to scrap my eyeballs off the back of my skull. This is going to be fun....

Well, today was a nice day- I slept in, wrote up my ride report, got my slides done for my lecture, ate a lot, and then went for a nice easy 28 mile ride.
As to the racer boys, they were kind of sorry when you think about it. What kind of self-respecting 22 year old racer boy rides at the same speed as two ladies pacing themselves for a 130 mile ride? Think about it, they should have blown past us quickly, not hung around in our vicinity for 45 minutes. I'm not even 100% sure they were trying to be mean. It's possible that they were trying to be funny- you know the type, they hang in packs, the insecure male, and their MO is to rag on each other because somehow ripping their friends down makes them feel stronger. Anyway, I don't see this as a cycling thing, it's an immature male thing. Don't get me wrong, packs of insecure women do the same thing, they're just less obvious about it. Maybe it was even cute, these racer boys trying to rag on us, they thought we were all friends, lol. It actually did not bother me in the slightest, I was 100% confident that my little group was comprised of way better cyclists. They were probably out on a 60 mile ride and very proud of their prowess.
I'm a little confused about the bonk, though. It's my understanding that you can only absorb 200 cal/hr so that's what I always aim to eat. Looking back, I was keeping up with that right up until the La Cumbre summit, although I did start to get behind with the unexpected climb after the summit, on the descent, and during those miles leading up to lunch. I also underestimated the ride from SB back to Ojai, it was "easy" but still 60 miles when I'd already become glycogen depleted. Clearly at that point, I was running off calorie intake, needed to be eating fairly constantly. Im still confused as to where the calories from that huge lunch went. I'm pretty sure I digested and absorbed it, I didn't puke it up after all and felt fine GI wise, I don't think it was just sitting there undigested.
So I'm now thinking:
1. Maybe I can absorb more than 200 cal/hr, I'm going to try it and see
2. I typically think I burn about 350 cal/hr when cycling, but need to remember with really tough work like this, it's probably way more, 500-550 cal/hr
3. I have been afraid to eat a big lunch, people have told me I'll be unable to digest it, all the blood will be going to my muscles. I'm sure that's true to some extent but I think I can eat way more while resting than people have led me to believe

I eat a normal dinner the night before, maybe a little more than normal, not much. In two days off I eat lightly, other wise I start to gain weight. I've been doing centuries and all day rides about 19-20 years. It's good for my arthritis, it takes 10-20 miles to warm up. I go a lot faster at mile 90 than mile 9. My joints need two days off. It makes me stronger faster anyway. Muscles need two days to recover if you train hard enough to make a difference. Soft easy to digest food is best.
I eat all kinds of stuff on the ride. Nutri-grain bars, cliff bars, brownies, cookies, etc. Fruit punch or something similar. Liquid is the fastest energy, soft food is next. Like gels, or pie filling. I look at my watch and eat about 300 calories per hour at the beginning, and less as time goes on. If I start to bonk I stop and eat, now that helps every time. I've done a few centuries on fruit punch only. I get too hungry without something in my stomach.
In between rides I eat healthy, but not a lot. No carb loading days before. I'm 63.
