me neither. i was bemoaning my own descent into bits and bobs when I could be doing the riding without the bobs and bits.

come to think of it, I'm sure I would ride more if I had a bike with platform pedals to use for quick casual rides. a fixie or SS is perfect for that. maybe I should get a new bike of such a style.

Hey HP, Has anyone mentioned Mio as yet another alternative to Garmin?
Cyclo 3.0" WIFI - Mio
I purchased their cheapest model, the 105, for something like $50 from overseas and have been pretty happy with it. It's got a frustrating user interface and they require their own clunky software to extract initial readings - but after that you can link it to Strava. So that's a negative. But the device itself works pretty well and the top model (505) has all the bells and whistles: Barometric altitude, Di2 support, BT, ANT, etc etc.

Then do it. I am a 100% firm believer that everyone should ride his/her bike in the manner which is most enjoyable to him/her. If less gear would make you ride more, then move in that direction. You're not getting any younger @coasting. The time is now.

Heathpack, she needs to know. What? Everything.
Interestingly enough, the "wind in the hair" cyclists are forever bemoaning the complexity of the type of cycling that I do. Yet who is out there actually riding day after day, week after week? Me, data girl. I just like to ride my bikes. I just like data. Data does not detract for someone like me, it vastly enhances the experience.
To each his/her own of course. But it just strikes me as funny when the wind-in-the-hairs imply my data devices take the joy out of cycling. Because I doubt there is anyone out there who likes to ride more than I do.

all this talk about garmin...when did cycling become so complicated. I remember when I picked up the bike and just rode with GAY ABANDON . Now I dress funny, I fiddle with my nads to get comfortable, I eat, I digest, I check tyres, I check my bag, I check my pockets, I worry about food and drink, I put on my funny shoes, I fiddle with computer (well that has ended now), etc etc.

In Taipei they have the city provided commuter bikes that are free if you use it for 30 mins. i ride it wihtout helmet. it is a heavy step through commuter bike. and it is fun just pottering around in the middle of the night on the empty streets. i been doing that a fair bit recently.

The interesting thing is that most people who have Stages Power Meters run then with Edge 500s or 510s. I am the only one I know of who has had problems to this extent. I think I am majorly taxing the capabilities of these units- I ride a lot of miles with 3 connected devices and sometimes am on the bike for freakishly long periods of time in the presence of a lot of other bikes transmitting various signals. Quite honestly, my impression is that the Edge 510 is barely capable of doing what its advertised to do- connect to multiple ANT+ devices, connect with Bluetooth devices, and do this flawlessly for the duration of your ride. Then I ask it to do all of those things (well not connect to a BT device but just function in the presence of the BT signal from the Stages) for an extended period of time and it just can't. I think the basic software/technology is shaky. Every few weeks Garmin seems to be releasing a new software patch (theres a new one now, just updated my software 3 weeks ago maybe, you can never go too long with Garmin saying you have the latest version of the software). Not a fundamentally stable system IMO.
Also its hard for me to know when someone says "my XYZ brand unit works just fine," if XYZ unit will work just fine for me. The unfortunate reality is that I'm probably going to only find this out by ponying up and buying something else. Because of this, I guess I should probably try to keep cost to a minimum. But that Pioneer is tempting.

As I see it here is the deal. If riding is by itself the object, then an old time bike speedometer/odometer with just a few functions will be fine. Or heck, no computer at all. But if riding is a means to accomplishing a stretch goal, then there is no end to the electronic assistance that cyclists will seek out to achieve that goal and to verify that it has been achieved. As the electronic aids that are available have become more complex, they have been adopted by the goal oriented, and that complexity has been incorporated into cycling.
I have no goal, so I have no need for measuring my performance. I just like to ride and even that only in a very narrow temperature band. I use a $6 wireless computer. But other folks are really concerned about reaching a goal, and they need a way to know that they have.

For my steel bike I have a CatEye still sitting in the package on the shelf at home for the last two years. That bike is so enjoyable to ride I couldn't care less how fast I'm going or how far I went. Just riding with a smile on my face. I often chuckle at the 41 ilk who would claim I'm not doing it right if I'm smiling.

That's me. I just ride to enjoy riding. Couldn't care less about measurable objectives, other than to maintain my svelte physique.

Used to be a wireless model that came under different brand names, Ascent, etc. Way passé now. I have picked them up for $6 on ebay. They are getting harder to find these days. The computer never wears out, but when I get another bike, I need more mounting brackets. so I have several of the computers just lying around. I am fixed for life. Recently got three for $20 of a different, no-name one from China. Works great and looks a lot like the Ascent.
Here is the search page results on ebay: wireless bike computer | eBay

Right but what I'm saying is has the Joule been able to stay connected to the Stages for 13 hours continuously? Or even 5 or 6 hours? How long are you riding for? I do have problems on short rides, but am more likely to have them on very long rides. 100+ miles I can be pretty sure I'll have an Edge failure. 50 miles or less, the problems are more a rarity.
Also, are you using speed/cadence sensors or getting cadence from the Stages and speed from GPS? Are you also wearing a HR monitor.
That's what I meant by my comment above. Lots of people tell me that their head unit works just fine, but I wonder if they are riding in quite the same way that I am.
