fyi, the wrong length indicator spindle could cause shifting problems for sure, but these problems would probably not be evident when you are bypassing the cable and pulling the indicator chain...

if you feel like you are capable of opening up the hub and swapping the innards, you can almost certainly replace the pawls and clutch..

it really isn't hard, and it doesn't require special tools...
