Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Busted

I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop today.

I was downtown headed through a 4-way stop with a traffic light. The light was red and I was turning right. This stop actually has great visibility and I could see nobody was coming, so I pulled the old California roll through the light.

Turns out the roll was completely blatant, so the cop pulled me over (not sure where he came from). I didn't have an official ID on me, so technically I could have gone to jail and received a $150 fine on top of that. Instead, the cop just gave me a lecture and said that since he saw I slowed down and looked he would settle for a warning, but the law is that I have to stop and unclip. He was nice about the whole thing. I just got the feeling that he thought I was one of those guys who blows through stop signs all the time, which I'm not. I can see where he would get that impression, though.

I was wrong. No doubt about it. I deserved the fine for sure. If the cop starts lecturing sidewalk and wrong-way cyclists I'll actually be happy about this whole thing.

You have to unclip? Seriously? I can come to a complete stop without putting my foot down...

I think he was bullsh***ing about the unclipping part, unless the law was designed around Look compatibles. But a warning is nice instead of $150 bucks.

I doubt you have to unclip. The cops just assume (correctly) that most people can't do a track stand, so they expect someone who comes to a full stop will need to put a foot down briefly.

So in Nevada you are required to carry and ID or it's potential jail time and $150 fine?

Agreed - a complete stop is sufficient even if you stay clipped-in. And there is also no requirement to have any form of ID along. You are required to give your correct name if requested as part of a valid traffic stop, but there's no need for DL or other ID if you're not driving a motor vehicle.

If you commit a misdemeanor crime without an ID they can take you to jail. That's what the cop told me.

not for very long I'll bet. Also, here in NC, we dont really have to worry about that. At least not up here in the mountains. that part may be a litte different in charlotte or raleigh.

I regularly track-stand long traffic lights. But I guess if you don't consider 5 minutes (not a light, just how long I can go before I get bored) "very long", then you're right.

Nevermind. Not for a right turn.

Red light is a stop sign. Stop sign is a yield.

This would be true anywhere. Walking with a dog is OK, when the dog is a pit bull and has taken someone's leg off, you AND dog better have ID.

For a right turn, but not otherwise.

A person operating a bicycle or human-powered vehicle approaching a steady red traffic control light shall stop before entering the intersection and shall yield to all other traffic. Once the person has yielded, he may proceed through the steady red light with caution. Provided however, that a person after slowing to a reasonable speed and yielding the right-of-way if required, may cautiously make a right-hand turn.
Compare that to:

A person operating a bicycle or human-powered vehicle approaching a stop sign shall slow down and, if required for safety, stop before entering the intersection
Italics are mine.

I was ticketed in Griffith Park (Southern Cal) for trackstanding then continuing through a stop sign. I was told it isn't considered a complete stop unless you put our foot down. This counts for M/C's as well.

Contest it! There is nothing in the California Vehicle Code that says your foot has to be down.

The put a foot down thing comes from the m/c rules of the road.

My understanding in Washington you not only have to stop, but you have to place a foot onto the ground as well.

Which doesn't make any sense. Have you ever seen someone track-stand a Harley?

This happened in 97. After the fact I found out that there is not statute requiring you to put a foot down. However to contest the ticket would have cost me well over 600 bucks in lost work so it was a cost/benefit equation. My insurance company said it wouldn't increase my rates so I just paid the 185 bucks and moved on.

Someone in Tucson contested ticket a while back for not unclipping at stop sign but doing a trackstand.
Individual took it to court, brought his bike and showed judge that he did stop by doing a couple minute trackstand.
Case was dismisssed.
Law in your state may read differently.

I can do it on my Buell (for a second or two, that is).

Close enough to a Harley?

I'll allow it, but I'm gonna need video, because that sounds awesome.
