Jet Blue VS. Cyclists in CARMAGEDDON

https://www.bikecommutenews.com/2011/...-jet-blue.html

This weekend part of the 405 freeway will be closed for construction. People are really freaking out about it and lots of cyclists are thinking of ways to take advantage of this. A small group within the Midnight Ridazz community is going to put on a show of speed by racing a Jet Blue flight plan from Burbank to Long Beach. Check it out!

How long is your route?

This sounds fun.

I don't know their exact route but the shortest possible way is around 30 miles.

That's going to be tight. It can be tough to average much over 20mph in traffic with lights and stop signs and hills. They're giving themselves a 1:15 head start based upon recommended arrival time at the departing airport.

If these are strong riders doing a pace line, they may be able to average 20mph but that's probably going to mean going consistently quite a bit faster than that between lights for the entire ride. That will still leave around 15 minutes of riding left after the plane takes off if it takes off on time.

This could be close.

I don't think it will be close at all. Even if the plane leaves on-time, there's 10-15 minutes of taxiing, plus 10-15 minutes in the air, plus 10-15 minutes to get to the gate, plus 1-15 minutes to get off the plane (depending on the seat, of course), plus getting to the rendezvous point.

Adding all that up, that gives...wait a minute...this could be close! ;-)

They need to have a Jet Blue employee at the mid-way point to serve cola and toss packages of peanuts at the riders.

38.4 according to Google.

Gimicks on top of Gimicks. The route is Mainly on the 5 well east of where I would expect there will be problems if any.

Personally I doubt there will ba any general problems. Some specific problems for those really close to the closure, esp if they have to get somewhere just the other side of it.

I freaking love this stunt. Here's the crew that's doing it: https://www.wolfpackhustle.com/

Obviously, they're building in the time it takes to get to the airport an hour before the flight leaves (as well they should).

(Is it just me, or does it seem like LA is dominating the cycling news the lately?)

That would actually be good PR on Jet Blue's part and cost next to nothing.

Here is the plan and "the rules" from the above web page... looks pretty cool to me... Be great if someone would follow and film this.

Apparently Jet Blue is aware of it, although not exactly "endorsing" it.

UPDATE (7/15 12:37PM PST): Ride rules and details (Subject to change, more details as they become available)

Cyclists will depart from a residence near the intersection of Cahuenga and Chandler Blvd. in North Hollywood at 10:50 AM PST (Saturday, July 16) Flight Departs 12:20pm and we're basing the cyclists' departure time on the airline's recommended passenger arrival time of 1.50 hours before departure. (we're doing a little less to be fair)
Cyclists will be required to follow all traffic laws.
The finish line is the light house at the Shoreline Aquatic Park in Long Beach (adjacent to Acquarium of the Pacific)
Ezra and I will take a cab from LGB to the finish line courtesy of GaryRidesBikes
FIRST TO ARRIVE AT THE LIGHT HOUSE WINS!

Sigh, I can't get any riders to head out to Long Beach with me. I guess I'll race the race to Long Beach and see how I do on my own

Was curious about this so I did a google "cyclist vrs jet" and found About 2,780,000 results (0.28 seconds)

Specifically cyclist vrs jet blue brings up 210 related articles...

Pretty awesome considering how this has quickly come about.

Apparently to finish the whole "Top Gear" like challenge, someone has decided to walk and use public transit...

Here's an interesting story... Some other cyclists, a jogger and skate boarders... warned off of the closed 405 as it is "too dangerous." (it's a freakin' closed highway man... get a grip)

https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...n-freeway.html

And as the plane finally takes off...

And finally...
Carmageddon: Bicyclists declare victory in race with JetBlue flight

https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...ue-flight.html
The six bicyclists racing a JetBlue flight from Burbank to Long Beach Saturday proved the power of the pedals, beating the flight by a long shot. The cyclists, members of the urban bicyclist organization Wolfpack Hustle, made the trip in 1 hour and 34 minutes, using the path along the Los Angeles River for most of the trek.

Yeah, the plane was delayed... couple that with the time waiting in the TSA line, and whatever time it took to get to the airport and then the wait to board...

Sheesh, bikes win hands down.

At best it was a 40 minute flight... surrounded by hours of hassle and delay.

It took the bike guys just over 90 minutes to do the whole thing... I think even public transit beat the plane. And you don't get "felt up" riding the bike (don't know about public transit... that can be just plain weird).

Heck just the 40 minute flight and an hour to get to the airport and get through TSA would still take 100 minutes... the bike guys beat that by almost 10 minutes.

Now why is it again that "everyone drives in LA?"

That's the main reason I hate flying, not the actual flying itself.

Laziness.

News update...

https://news.yahoo.com/la-avoids-fear...203640830.html

The drumbeat of "Carmageddon" warnings triggered an instant industry of businesses trying to capitalize on the phenomenon. JetBlue offered special flights from Burbank in the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach, with seats for the short hop costing just $4 or $5.

A cycling group saw that as an opportunity for a race. The cyclists started their ride 90 minutes before the flight's departure time to simulate the time that passengers would have to arrive at Burbank. Another member of the group took the flight and all were to meet at a Long Beach park.

Cyclist Stephan Andranian said it took the bikers one hour and 34 minutes to complete the ride from Burbank to Long Beach, largely following the Los Angeles River. Flight passenger Joe Anthony's total travel time including cab ride from Long Beach Airport to the park was just over 2 1/2 hours.

"We want to show that using a bike in LA is not only possible but that it can be faster than other modes of transportation," Andranian said.
Nice general article that also includes details of the "big race."

But were the riders irradiated, anal probed and generally harassed for the first 30-60 minutes of the trip? If not, then it wasn't a fair contest.

Bikes: Tons

If anything, it shows how ridiculous it is to fly 40 miles.

OK, does anyone have the average speed of the cyclists?

I doubt that one hour savings is going to convince many motorists to switch to riding a bicycle if they have to ride like the wind, and arrive at their destination drenched in sweat.

Probably as much as you do when you go across town... Remember that was all they and the airline passengers were doing... merely going across town.

At 35 miles, I have trouble with that "merely" part, especially in trying to encourage people to switch to bicycle commuting, who some are lucky to have ridden a bicycle that far in their entire life.
