Weird ride announcement here. If any of my Boston folks have been following the forecast we're slated to get 6"+ tomorrow night. If said snow materializes and it's not so warm that it turns to slush on impact, I'm going to go out for another snow ride. It could be 9pm, it could be 12am, who knows. It'll all depend on what the weather's doing.
You've been warned. If I decide to go out, I'll post here maybe an hour or 90 minutes in advance. We can meet at Copley if anyone sees it in time. If you've never done the nighttime blizzard ride it's approximately awesome.

Nice pix thanks. They came out very nice. Clear too. Makes me wish I was there.
I have a nice camera, but when I take high resolution pictures for myself, I find that I have to compress them to death to get down to the limit to put them on a posting. Then they look lousy. What resolution are you starting with?
I guess that if I go to low res on the camera when I take the pix it will look better on a posting. ?? Or is there some way to exceed the file size? I don't want to post huge pictures. Just good enough quality, not huge files. ??

I start out with 2048x1536. To get nice photos at night I have a cheap (like $15) compact tripod that goes everywhere with me and I usually shoot a 1 to 1.5 second exposure. The above were resized to 640x480 at JPEG quality 0.75 (or 75, depending on whether your image editor counts JPEG quality as 0 to 100 or 0.0 to 1.0).

ImageShack. Then you can simply upload the pics there and post thumbnails here.
Or just compress like you said. Remember, you can also diddle with the color count.

Ha! You ask me like I know. I was really hoping for some action by now. On the other hand, perhaps that just means it's taking its time and will linger over the area a little more. Unless it's seriously raining at the same time I'll probably be going out unless the snow doesn't materialize at all. It's supposed to be in the teens by around 9, but then it was also supposed to be colder by now, so I don't know.
I guess I say change your tires but I don't know when I'll be going out....

Hang on, are you guys riding track bikes in the snow? With regular tires at over 100 psi? I rode in the slush last week, and I rode in today, but there won't be any packed snow until tonight probably. Will I kill myself on road tires?

Yeah, thin slicks can work in the snow, you just have to be a little more careful. But in my case, if I go out I'll be riding a fixed gear mountain bike with 2.1" wide tires.
If anything my problem is the opposite, I tend to float on top of the snow at times when it would be better to sink a bit.

Okay, I just rode home in the slush with no problems (all of 7 blocks). The bike lane had a bit of undisturbed snow, and I was surprised at how much grip I had in back. Hopefully we'll get some actual accumulation so I can try this out.

Tonight
Snow..heavy at times. Snow may mix with sleet and rain for a time after midnight. Snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches. Windy with lows in the upper 20s. Temperature rising into the lower 30s after midnight. Northeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.

i would love to go out while the snow was fresh and clean and unpacked, but i've got to be out in it at 8 am anyway, and old folks like me needs their sleep.
btw, i have a much easier time riding on any snow on the fixed with the skinny tires. brakes tend to crap out in the muck and the fat tires don't cut through anything. but thats just me. on the fixed, i have a lot of fun riding in the snow. even when i'm working. i'm usually the one grinning like an idiot downtown mornings after a snowstorm.
