Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's a deliciously cool 63F here. Time to ride. No balaclava needed.

In my enthusiasm, I'd forgotten that I don't have a headlight and that I'll need to traverse ~4 miles of poorly-lit paths. I guess I gotta cool my jets and wait for the sky to lighten up a bit.

Seems unanimous. Pushing 8:00 and no fans on in the house. Long sleeves too. Daytime riding season beckons!

Since I got the hub dynamo, a few years ago, this never happens anymore. I highly recommend it if you do much riding in the dark, and are not a weight weenie. Never think about it again. Just hop on and go. The drawback, of course, is that a battery powered light is required in case of a repair.

I decided starting a 2hr ride at 4:30pm, given those circumstances, was unwise. So Mr H gave me a lift to the top of the mountain and I rode the ridge trail and descended back into town. A nice hour on the mtb, very little walking this time, just a couple of tricky bits that I wouldn't have minded trying but figured remaining intact might be smarter.

Ten miles I think, a beautiful day. Didn't really have time to stop & take pics. We'll just one...

Brilliant sunshine, actually. It's just a freak cold snap.

I'm pretty ok with it, no need to ride early to beat the heat.

Man, low-end crabon rocks.

The Xenith with 23s handles the road imperfections better than the Haanjo and tubeless 25s. Much more responsive, too - what a fun ride. I definitely left the gate wanting to smash my loop record and I certainly did that, even though I wasn't exactly feeling tip-top (I did manage 20mph - woo, I'm UberFred!). I could probably do the same on the Haanjo on a day when I'm feelin' my Wheaties, but yeah - bikes do make a difference.

Not exactly a ww, but I'm not lookin' to add pounds to the bike if I don't have to... and since I don't ride in the dark too often...

Your efforts in that area would be nearly as pointless as this:
