That would explain a lot. Whoever built the bike did a great job, but the spokes on the wheels are actually a few mm too long, which I wouldn't expect from a company pumping out gazillions of the same model bike every year. I would expect that from a guy in the late 80s who doesn't have access to a spoke length calculator and did the maths and measurements in the garage.
