Wrapped up the "interim" build on my Pinarello last night. I had a 4603 Tiagra group on the shelf, so it seemed a shame to leave this hanging around as a bare frame.

I had to visit a few local shops yesterday to find the downtube cable stops. A shop having an "owner retirement" sale clearing out their inventory at 60% off had an Italian threaded 105 bottom bracket. Everything else I had in the parts bin.

Just a heads up for anyone looking to pickup a new groupset for a retro roadie. Ribble has them on sale until later today with a discount code. 105 5800 is about $305 shipped and ultegra 6800 is about $505 shipped. Discount code shim10 for 10pound off 100 pound + or shim25 for 25pound off 250+. I used the shim25 code to get the lower price on both these sets.

Thanks for the PSA. That's a great price for a sweet 11spd group.

Shimano is getting really aggressive with their pricing. I wouldn't be surprised if the EU is looking in to it. The Ribble discount just makes is absurd.

I have never seen 5800 under $340 or 6800 under $540. Luckily I don't have a need for a group right now or the funds to even buy them at these crazy prices. Got the email today and thought some of y'all might be interested. Is there a reason why the groups are so much cheaper in the UK?

Just in time to call it a winter project, the Rossin is finally done.

. Nice job, Ratfink. Is the Sora living up to your expectations? Have a set I'm saving for a similar build.

Here's a first build of my 1980s Matsuri "The Professional" with what I had in the parts bin. Mostly 10-speed 105. Rides nicely, though I'm not loving the cockpit. Planning a wheel build around some Shimano 600 hubs as well.

After a few months with a back injury I decided it was time to take this out for a quick stroll thru my back yard. Definitely worth the mild suffering and it rides like a dream.

That Rossin's class!

Worst excuse for reposting your own bike: I've cleared out the spare room so the bike has a new home. Now just waiting for the roads to dry out properly before the Ron gets going again for 2016.

Funny you ask because when riding it I was thinking about commenting on it!! The Sora definitely is not 'crisp' shifting, there is a slight delay. BUT - it is nearly plug and play - meaning I had to do virtually no adjusting and it shifts perfectly to all gears. Also it is SO easy to upgrade parts - like I did for the rear derailer since I had a 105 RD laying around...

Great bike! Somehow, the stem really ties it all together for me.

Best bike thread on the interwebs.

Man, that thing is all bike. Superbe ride. 's got to be as smooth as it looks. Very graceful rear on that bike.
PS: Those wheels look flippin' amazing sans decals. Never thought of that approach before. Ideas, man, ideas.

I don't see how anyone can compete with 5800 for $305 shipped. Add a $300 set of wheels and a nice bunch of bits, and a high-class retro-upgrade roadie is actually cheaper than it used to be, and quite comparable to the original OEM stuff on many, many bikes. Is anyone else thinking that way?

Thought about it, but will pass based on funky looking crankset. Perhaps more suitable on a newer frame. I think DA7800 with the 5 arms and rings replaced with more traditional looking ones is as modern as I'd go for a retro rebuild with Shimano - and I am doing so. Maybe 5800/6800 on a frame where it doesn't stand out as much, like black or dark color frame with black grouppo?

I've been trying to tell people for a few months that they can buy a vintage frame with high quality steel and build it up with 105 stuff from Ribble at least as cheaply as you can get a brand new bike with a lower quality (and probably aluminum) frame and the same components. I built my LeMond Buenos Aires that way (with 5703 105 stuff before it all disappeared) for under $1400 with all new parts. The build vs. buy decision is getting really interesting.

You could probably get a vintage crankset put on some 11sp chainrings, sell your new 105 crankset and come out at basically a wash- I hate the new crankset look as well

I've built a few with silver 5700 and used 7800 cranksets, to approval from the owners. Almost all were of the same opinion on the 5800 crankset. The lucky ones wanted compacts and found either used carbon cranksets or Sugino's, etc that were more traditional, which really helped the look. They then sold the 5800 crankset/BB to recoup the costs, and came out about even.

+1. It's been sort of a theme here for a while, but has never been so competitive, price-wise. As long as the EU has financial problems, we are obligated to help them out by buying from them at prices like this.
