Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm happy with my Fujifilm XP50. Used it on vacations; sizzling summer in China;
freezing temps in Philadelphia, dropped it in a kayak with saltwater in Puerto Rico.
Had it with me on club rides; was in my sweaty jersey pocket for a few centuries I
did last year. Keeps on ticking

I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix P150 with super zoom. It's a compromise in many ways, but considering the price and that I really wanted the 42x optical zoom and 16 megapixel resolution, it's fine.

I took this (hand held) from a Cessna 172 at 5500 feet over Sacramento. Pretty impressive for a cheap point-and-shoot.

I'm a professional here in WM. I mostly do headshots, but I like to dabble in promotional.

Photography is another one of my hobbies, I've got a Canon 20D that I shoot with. It's old but it does just fine. Here are some of my pictures if anyone is interested.

I use a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot when I ride. It's what I took with me on our recent 8-month Round the World tour, and on just about every other ride as well.

I also have a Canon 60D which I do take with me on some rides ... I'll load it into a pannier and do a short local ride ... but for the most part that camera comes with me if we're going somewhere in the van, or for doing indoor scenes.

My photos: https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka-bb/sets/

My RTW photos, shot with the Nikon Coolpix: https://www.flickr.com/photos/machka-...7632796492886/

Taken from the Mont Blanc lookout, with the Nikon Coolpix ...

Taken on the beach along the west coast of France, with the Nikon Coolpix ...

Taken at home, on the dining room table, with my Canon 60D ... as an experiment to see how something like this might turn out ...

Nikon D4 and D700 user here. I do freelance on the side—mostly concerts. As a matter of fact, off to shoot Eryka Badu tonight. I've got Beyonce, Bon Jovi, Jewel, and Rolling Stones coming up over the next two months.

All of the Canon 50s have issues. The f/1.8 is fine in terms of center sharpness, but the AF isn't great and the five aperture blades gives you tell-tale (and sometimes distracting) bokeh.

True, which is why I converted a pentax 50 to a canon mount. the 50 1.8 is OK if you stop it down a little bit and my 1d drives it plenty fast, but my 40D didn't. I had borrowed a 50 1.4 for a short while and hated it. For whatever reason, Nikon's wide zooms appear to be the bomb (particularly that 14-24G) but Canon's big whites are fantastic. If I could only have one lens, it'd be my 70-200 f2.8.

I haven't bought anything for my photography hobby in probably 4 years.
I got into cycling 3 years ago, have bought 6 bikes (including 2 hybrids that have been sold), multiple wheelsets, parts, etc.
I still have more money in my photography than in cycling.

I currently shoot with a Canon 7D. Have a bunch of accessories including flashes, strobes, muslin, etc.
Lenses:
Canon 24-105mm f/4L
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L
Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5
Canon 100mm f/2.8L IS (Macro)
Canon 50mm f/1.8 (On my camera about 80% of the time.) Cheap, light, fast. Makes for a great carry around combination on the 7D.

Currently lusting after the the Sigma 35mm f/1.4. But for the $900 it costs I keep thinking I could get a lot of bike parts instead.

I only shoot as a hobby. I make a little money here and there, but not enough to pay for fancy gear.

I've had a few MF 50s, my Pentax was okay but I liked the C/Y Zeiss much more. In the end, though, I'm not a fan of the 50mm FoV on a FF camera, so I went back to the 35mm-ish range. Unfortunately, at 35mm, I can't focus by eye for **** and stop-down metering was an additional pain in the butt so I sold my MF glass there, too.

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum - I prefer wide. Sold my 70-200 f/4L IS and never looked back. If I could only have one lens, it'd be the 35 f/1.4L, though I'd survive with the 16-35 f/2.8L.

Wide and fast just doesn't make sense to me on a crop camera.

well, if I had a FF camera I'd probably do the same but I only like taking pictures of things that are moving. Landscapes at 10 fps!

I picked up the 17-40 for landscape action because even on a 1.3 body, the 16-35 mk1 is awful once you get more than half way out of the center. f2.8 is still useful though.

Uhh. Why?
35mm on a Canon crop is 56mm equivalent. It's the perfect walk around combination.

Agreed. About 95% of my shots are taken using the Nikon 35mm f1.8 on whatever body I pick. For the price, a prime lens like that is amazing.

Yeah, I know how crop factors work, thanks. I say that because you're not getting everything that you're paying so much for - it's not easy to build a sharp, wide *and* fast, and the price tags reflect that. Lenses like the 24L and the 35L (and Siggy 35/1.4) are beasts of a completely different nature on a FF camera vs a crop - there is no crop equivalent.

The Nikon 35/1.8 is a little different and I'd exclude from my statement as it's not really a wide lens - it's built specifically for crop camera, unlike those mentioned above.

...and then of course, the other hobby:

And some super old band photos:

All these photos are so old...all taken with my old Canon 20D. I need to start taking photos again, I miss it.
