Good reason to wear a base layer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The more and more you post, the less and less credible any of your opinions become. You have a clear disdain for certain groups of people here, why?

The quoted post in your signature makes your comments a little ironic...

So the little buddy system requirements must include ignorant. This is what I mean by the little buddy sytem. Somebody pokes his nose in with his ignorant comments while I'm giving UMD a chance to drop the subject, I reply and I'm the one making waves. Let me see, whe have I invited datajunkie into the conversation I was trying to drop?

Seems to me, that I'm not the idiot!

Were is your opinion of his assinine comment?

I love when people say, ok I'm trying to drop it so everyone else has to be quiet about it now. Sorry Mr. Beanz, now everyone else is calling you out. I'll drop it, but I still want to know what I did to you that makes you hate me so much.

Please keep on topic and do not have your personal disputes here on the open forum.

Actually, you sit here in the forums, insult people, and play bigshot. Well I meet a ton of riders and one of the common questions is, "who the **** is this *******UMD"? Mayb eyou aren';t the god you think you are!

My signature comes more from riding and knowing people, not playing some racer pro god on the forums. Believe me, it aint just the recreational riders like me either that make comments.

It's funny I hear similar comments about you. Maybe you aren't the god you think you are.

I certainly don't think I'm a god and never claimed anything of the sort.

I'm just a guy sharing my experiences, which happen to be different than yours.

I never called you an idiot, but if we're going to result to name calling, I'll leave that to you. I was asking you a question, that you didn't answer by the way. But you keep posting and insulting people. That's fine, but it makes it hard to find you credible when you do that, especially with you touting your own values to the cycling community.

And, as umd has pointed out, if you really want to drop it, stop responding.

Don't impress yourself thinking your race is so different from any other event that requires common sense.

I gave you a chance to drop it, use your brain!
I think that your example is a good example of how non racers might see this. If I'm following a bigger vehicle, which is blocking my vision, down the expressway at normal speed, I have a lot better chance of avoiding an accident should that vehicle swerve around something in front of him. And, I'm much more likely to put more distance between us in anticipation of something going wrong, being blind to the road ahead.

Now, if I'm following that vehicle at 90, right up his ass, and he swerves, I'm not going to come out as well.

I think it comes down to the fact that you guys that race put yourselves into a situation that many of us find moronic, yet can't comprehend why we can see the fault in your behavior. So to me, once you chose to be in that position, you own full responsibility for running into someone.

That being said, I can see the possible advantage of wearing a base layer in case of a crash. I can also think of reasons to not wear one. To each their own.

I clench my teeth and brace for impact hoping it won't be bad enough to hurt my wheel or send me flying. How close I stay to the wheel in front of me depends on the familiarity and confidence I have with the rider in front and the general dynamic of the group. Something similar happened on a group ride on Sunday when the rider in front signaled the pothole too late, but fortunately I was able to remain upright which was tough given the size of the gravel and angle of the hole.

I think most bike racers would agree that we put ourselves in moronic situations (or at least what most people would consider moronic positions. But most of us also accept that the risk is that something like this crash happens and obviously the risk/reward is worth it to us.

That's kind of the point umd is making against people laying sole blame on him. I'm very much in the sh1t happens camp.

Yes, thank you for a well-reasoned and balanced look at it. Although this was not a race, it unfolds as though it were one. We all chose to put ourselves in that situation and we all accept responsibility for it. Nobody who was there is throwing around blame, it's one of those "that's what happens when we do this kind of thing" situations. Obviously I ran into (actually brushed) him, I don't deny that.

Exactly. And like I said to Cat4Lifer, my intent for the thread is not to tell people to wear one, but just to illustrate a benefit that some people may not have been aware of.
