+1 on using a shim, I keep a small aluminum shim in my tool box that slips right into the slot once its pried open and holds it there until you get the bars where you want them, then pops right out.

Here's my piece of advice. Spend the $20 and buy yourself the most useful tool in any mechanic's arsenal: a stem and seatpost spreader.

Those are just flat nosed snap ring pliers available at any good tool vender.
