Maaca, Boxers believe that only boxing helps to be better boxers,
Well boxers when they train they do a myriad of calestenic type workouts, with a trainer focusing on specific exercises that will make them better boxers - same with basketball players soccer players and other athletes.
If you are going to spend time exercising off your bike I would recommend getting a coach or personal trainer who can build a calestenic type workout that will help you become a better cyclist.

When Sarah Ulmer was training for her World Champ, World records and Olympic gold in the IP last year, she did all or most of her strength training on a bike (erg). There are some results that speak for themselves.

Kolbe1 sounds a lot like Peter Griffin.
Lots of reps with relatively low weight builds strength with minimal gain of mass. Weight gain really shouldn't be a concern if you remain active. Muscle burns calories much quicker than other forms of tissue.

So macca did you try that exercise i suggested? You had my personal guarantee that it would work. I say do about 100 each night. When it starts burning it just means that your doing good.
Do not do anything to do with weights for cycling it will just rip peices of your muscle so that when it grows over again it will be much larger, making you heavy.
Do that exercise, push ups, sit ups and maybe even try yoga.

1.upper body and core strength will help your cycling way more than any potential negative from weight gain- you are not going for schwarzeneggar here, you know.
2. squats are great exercise for building leg strength. if you can ride, ride, but unless you live where there is no winter there will be times to do other things, such as lift.
3. proven fact that cycling is basically a non weight bearing exercise and people who exclusively cycle have a higher risk of fractures.
4. 16 yo dudes don't "get" hernias from lifting- hernia in a 16yo is almost always something they were born with.
5. have fun
6. everyone who is anyone over at the ocp lounge knows the quickest way to get faster- NEW BIKE!!!!!

well i am going to work on abdominals and my back using my own weight... this should not affect my weight yet still give me good stability on the bike thus making me more efficient and faster. nothing upper body tho.
