Got whacked.
So I conquered the bike, then the ride home, then the hills, then the track stand. I started to hammer. Got pretty decent. I made it home, through traffic, hills and lights (of which I did stop at.. for a few at least)... 17.7 miles, in 1 hour 17 minutes. Figured I had a place.
So, 16 October I went to a local fixie race. Got whacked on lap 6.
Demorilized, luckily, I was still able to drink with em and do my 14 mile ride home.
I've got work to do... Time to pick up the pace. Next time I'll drop the bag (perhaps the 14lbs bag held me back a little)..
But it was a good way to get SNAP back to reality.

Whacked as in spanked, bonked, dropped, or planted? (no, really... )
Good luck. What's your gearing? Honestly, 18 mph isn't that fast. I usually cruise around 20, sprint around 30, and average between 15 and 18 at the end of the day (which is pretty short for this 9-to-5er).

No offence buddy but I average more than 17 on my MTB when I'm on the road! What's your set-up? Do you have a double or triple? Like the man says, you really should average more than 17. Oh yeah, and did you get spanked, bonked, dropped, or planted?!!!

Guees what? your MTB has gears (this is the Fixed gear Single speed forum...that is pretty obvious) and brakes. A fixed gear does not. More to consider on a fixed gear, less to forget.
Much offense...

Do you have a double or a triple crank? Just thought if you find it hard to keep your speed, sometimes it's because you need to start off from a lower front cog, so that you can keep your pedal revs up but without putting too much load on your legs. A triple cog allows you to do this. Sorry if I completely missed your problem there!!!

You still don't get it, do you? He's riding a track bike through traffic. One chainring, one cog, a chain and now brakes. It is the purist form of riding. I'd bet even at lower speeds, he'd get around town faster than you. A lot of the people he was racing were probably messengers, too.

Ha!!!! Sorry guys!!!
Completely missed 165's previous post! Yep, this guy right here is a 100% twerp! Does 'tired little law student' count as a defence after a long day in lectures?!

Not even lawyer counts as a defence in the SS/Fix forum.

17 is good imo esp if you gotta go down lots of hills. I think I average about 16 or 17 on my commutes but this time of year busses and wet leaves make it even slower... I say let the cat out of the bag.

Mr. Gaunt, you can run off to the MTB and Road forums, but know that I (along with S2sxiii) will be stuck here taking a beating on your behalf.
Thanks.
