Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Nice generalization. You do know this isn't always true, right?

Yeah, that's not how it was for me. I went from BMX to road, to road & fixed, to road & BMX, to BMX alone, then back to road, and now I'm settling back into road & fixed. My late-in-life BMX resurgence was a bad idea, heh.

But I digress.

I too am an exemption but it is a plausible and common scenario given the often affordable cost of entry.

Not everybody starts out the gate with a cinelli.

I am a MTBer at heart, and I "graduated" to a SS. My FS geared MTB is in the "very expensive" category. So, I guess I just screwed up.....

What does that have to do with fixed gear riders continuing to ride only fixed gear bikes instead of "graduating" to other forms of cycling?

Well naturally, as with anything, there's people that stick with it and others that move on with their interests.

For example, if they wanted to start getting serious about racing at a velodrome they'd get that cinelli and ride that instead of their street ride there.

Are track bikes not fixed gear bikes?

You're still talking nonsense and not addressing your original generalization. The brand of bike ridden has nothing to do with what you originally said.

As for the generalization, I should have mentioned that *from my experiences* was apart of a fixed gear riding group where most members all eventually got geared rides of their own. Often riding the geared ride more and forgoing the fixed gear/ track bike to craigslist/ fixielist.

For mentioning Cinelli, not everybody can afford a "nice" bike when entering the sport. Some buy a kilo tt or purefix and end up upgrading to a nicer track bike or a geared bike when the time comes that so choose to do so if that is even the case.

FWIW, I always rode a road bike, (even way back when they were called "ten-speeds", then realized fun/simplicity of single speed bikes. Plus, and this is a minor point, they're cleaner. don't have to touch a greasy derailleur. Have owned two in past several years.

Whatever. I don't actually care because I ride whatever bikes I want to ride and don't need some tidy little box to put anything in. Generalizations in any form are usually worthless.

Also, I hate this notification bull**** every time someone quotes me.

I actually went the other way. Been mountain biking for years, love hitting the trails but despise having to load my bike up and drive outside the city for a good place to ride. It's something I've found myself doing less and less as I get busier with work and everything else.

The CF and spandex road bike scene has never really interested me, but I wanted to get back into riding more consistently. Not only for fun but for the workout. Hence the reason that a fixed gear really appealed to me. It's simple, can walk out the door in plain clothes and go for a quick 15-20 mile ride, which on the hilly terrain in my area provides a great workout.

Yup, definitely should've added "to new cyclists" to that sentence

But yeah a big fat +1 to that. No way I'm kitting up for a ride to grab food or run an errand.

I was going to link you to a thread in the Forum Suggestions & User Assistance forum which shows how to turn that off, but you already replied to that thread. Thusly rendering this post absolutely pointless.

That's one of the main reasons I had - and will soon have again - a fixed-gear bike; sometimes I want to ride and I don't have the desire or time to don the kit and strike out on the geared bike. Or, as you said, to make a quick 7-11 run or something.

I started with a hybrid, then touring bike (commuter), then SS and now split between FG and SS.

So maybe I took a step back?

Who cares. Sue me.

So... there was a problem with the site registration page. I grabbed the site owner's email address from the domain registration, emailed him, and together we got it fixed. So if you want to register an account with LAFixed, you can do that now.

BTW, y'all were right... it is a ghost town in there. =/

Makes me sad to see all these awesome communities... pretty much gone.
