Yeah, make it out and you can learn the route most of the way. After you do it once you'll be able to do it by yourself, there are only two or three places that are a bit confusing, but after that it's easy.
If you want to watch the races though, a more time-effective way to get down there would be to take caltrain to Diridon or tamien and ride from there. I'm always happy to have new people on the ride though, makes for good conversation.

Is that the station at Cahill Street? If so, it looks like it is about 7.5(bike) miles to Hellyer

Someone with more biking knowledge of the area might have a better route...

I'm sorry but profanity is essential in getting my message across.
Why the **** would you do that bedamned ride again, regularly, for fun??? What the **** is wrong with you people?

Thanks for the info!
I just did google mapping, and i think i got it right:
65 Cahill St (San Jose Station) to 995 Hellyer Ave (apprx address...i'm just BS'ing) is 8.3 miles.
hmm i was thinking about riding caltrain but junioroverlord's comment is starting to make me change my mind - weather permitted, i might do the full ride from SF to hellyer just because...i can.
(plus i haven't done any long ride since the last SF-SJ ride)

The Google maps that give you the longer route include the freeways..which would be faster for cars though longer..
I was doing it in Microsoft Streets and Trips so was able to use waypoints to keep you off the freeways...
