you shouldn't have a problem. worst case scenario, you have to do a 23 on the front and than add a link or half link to the back for a 25.

deathhare 12-30-07 08:00 AM

I had 25s on my Makino and there was literally no light between the tire and the fork.

Fugazi Dave 12-30-07 09:48 AM

Fork clearance varies, but it seems you should usually be OK with a 23. I ended up having to run a 19mm Rubino with the original fork on mine, as anything bigger would just jam into the fork crown.

andre nickatina 12-30-07 01:25 PM

Damn, that's really tight clearance... pics?

Fugazi Dave 12-30-07 01:30 PM

Hold on....I'll go pull the wheel off my bike and stick it in my old fork for a photo.

andre nickatina 12-30-07 01:43 PM

schwing!

Is 25c still ok, front wheel clearance on that Nagasawa above seems tight.

toight like a toiger =P

Varying sizes of frames.

2 of my nagasawas were 27.2
the blue one i ride is 27.0

Holy hell! Good luck riding anything with that type of clearance in any sort of rough weather.

Note that the fork is not presently on the bike. :) Swapped it out for a carbon road fork a few months ago. More clearance (I still run the Rubino, though, because it's there and a total b*tch to mount/unmount), and I can run a brake. The clearance is so tight on that fork that no brake ever made has short enough reach to work on that fork were I to drill it.

Get a keirin brake?

Fugazi Dave 12-30-07 02:12 PM

I like carbon forks and threadless. It's a practical build, not something for show, so I'm cool with running a different fork. Eventually when I build a second bike, I'll throw the original fork back on, but as long as it's my only ride the carbon fork will likely stay.

jdms mvp 12-30-07 02:18 PM

may i also mention, that different companies have different "Standards" for what constitutes a 23 or 25c etc wheel. a 23c in one brand is not equivalent necessarily to the next 23c of another brand. difference may be somewhat negligible in cases though =P

Fugazi Dave 12-30-07 02:21 PM

There are definite differences between manufacturers. For example, my favorite tire is the Specialized All Condition Pro, which is a 23mm tread on a 28mm casing. Fantastic tires, but noticeably fatter than other 23s.

Get a new Kalavinka for that price.

i believe the wait time is a year +.

that rensho price is ridiculous. imho i don't need* a rensho THAT badly to spend 1350+. i'm sure there are other options to being really tall =P

Why would you want to ride a track bike in rough weather with skinny tires and no brakes?

One is allowed to possess more than one type of bike.

br995 12-30-07 03:22 PM

I have had 23s on all of my NJS frames (4) and they all fit fine.

yeah it depends on the frame/fork. i'm running a 23c gatorskin, but think I could comfortably run
25c with no clearance issues..

my seatpost is 27.2 on the vivalo for whoever cares

i've ridden brakeless on 23's and 25's in the rain. get fenders and run good tires like Conti 4 Seasons and it's not all that bad. skidding comes like coaster braking and you're not that far off from someone braking with soaking wet rims/calipers. cheap and/or worn tires is a completely different story though.

then again, i wouldn't ride a keirin bike in the rain... that's what mass produced taiwanese steel is for!

Yes. I commuted two years in the city, rain and shine on a track bike. I know better now. At the time it was very convient to lock up in front of my condo and just blaze out whenever.

Now,in my case, fenders, a rack...hell a car works much better now that I'm in the 'burbs.
