Tires that won't go booM!
Been riding to school and have had blow outs twice now. Both times from holes in the side of the tires. I've now got 2 Michelin tires on there (sorry can't remember exactly which at the moment), any suggests on good tires that are a bit more durable. Replacing tires gets expensive.

i ride armadillos...super tough tires. theyre not very flashy looking (black with a brick red band on the insides) but they do their job well and are a good price.

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.
Continental makes excellent tires. Vittoria also makes excellent tires. Check to see if your brakes are rubbing your tires, as that tends to make holes in your tires no matter WHAT kinda tires you have.

i have a set of armadillo and a set of gatorskins, they're remarkable, both are fairly indestructable, i would say i feel like the gatorskins do drag slightly but they are great in the rain, i haven't ridden the armadillos in the rain so i cant comment on that but both are fairly indestructable, i only got the armadillos a month ago but over the summer i put almost 2000 miles on the gatorskins and they're pretty great

But, blowing holes in the side of the tires would suggest that either the bead failed due to a manufacturing defect or more likely, the tire wasn't seated on the rim properly or you trapped the tube under the rim when mounting it.
I would also check the rim to make sure theres no damage to where the bead hooks under.
You may know all this, in which case it maybe just cheapo tires.

i loved my armadillos when i had them on my fixie but i got a really good deal on them from ebay and they are WAY more expensive now that i look at them again. i'm over in huntington and have been getting tons of flats on my road bike lately from assy conditions on pch. i never see any fixie riders around. i have seen maybe 5 total.

The roads in westminster and long beach are even worse than pch. I ride my race bike on pch. But yeah, not many fixie riders out here, but there are some in Long beach.
To others: no brakes (track bike), rims seem in good condition, and I'm confident there wasn't any pinching of the tubes. I'm going to try the gatorskins I think, will have to check budget. Thanks for all the input.

have you really carefully examined where you are getting the flat? look at the hole in the tube: is it where the tube sits on the rim or where the tube interfaces the tire? that may help you narrow down how/where the flat is coming from. make sure you don't have any sharp burrs on the inside of the rim or that no spokes are exposed on the back of the rim. maybe also try a better rim strip (are you using velox?).

I use the panaracer "Tserv" tires and had no problems with flats except from pinch flats-but that was my fault for not paying enough attention to installing the tube correctly.

Man, get them GAtors, they rock. Sometimes they even spit rocks at cars if ya lucky. Or try those Speed Skins tire liners. They go in between the tube and tire and works great, if that's where your problems lay.....
