Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Thank you, but I'm afraid you haven't fixed the problem. It is, in fact, true that "be" cannot be used as an adverb; and it is certainly not generally regarded that "be" cannot be used as a verb (it's the single most commonly used verb in the English language, after all).

At this point, I'm not sure what exactly you meant to convey. Maybe you meant that it's generally regarded that "be" cannot properly be used as a present indicative verb without an auxiliary, e.g. "I be sick"? If so, the general public is right to think so, for the most part. I can think of one exception, though: the subjunctive mood ("if that be the case," "that every man be armed," etc.).

Or were you talking about something else?

Is there an accepted bikeforums.net convention for the serial comma? I don't want to run afoul of the usage police when posting this, that and the other.

But what about "the other"? If there is a redundancy convention for this forum we are all screwed.

Bikes: yes

reminds me of strongbad singing: "ooooooh, if you want to be posessive, it's just I T S, but if it's supposed to be a contraction then it's I T apostrophe S... scallawag!"

"****ing mongoloids continues"

I may (or might) be wrong, but I think you have a subject/verb agreement issue here. Elementary school rocks.

"any" can be used with either a singular or plural verb, dickface. here i am saying "if any [one] of you mongoloids." "of you mongoloids" is simply a partitive genitive expression and doesn't govern the number of the verb. grr. go back to school, fu<ktard.

Hear, hear. That was really well put. I was actually sort of moved. Just for that, I'm going to buy you a new set of Shift keys so that you can start capitalizing words properly again. No, no; don't try to talk me out of it. It's Christmas, man.

capitalization is simply a matter of formatting and, originally, emphasis. my knowledge of the language isn't predicated on whether or not i capitalize. however, knowing the difference between a contraction and a possessive is pretty damn important.

So a southerner is attending Harvard, and it's his first day on campus. He is lost. He approaches a posh looking gent and inquires, "Y'all know where the library is at?" The posh gent sniffs and responds, "Here at Hah-vahd, we don't end our sentences with prepositions." The southerner thinks for a moment, then responds, "Oh, pardon me. Y'all know where the library is at, ass hole?"

or is the use of "damn" as a adverb so "conventional" that it's "acceptable"? well, it's not in my book. my book is pretty big, though.

People who don't know the rules governing phrasal adverb hyphenation are almost as repugnant as people who think it's OK to throw around the term "mongoloid" as an epithet in mixed company.

just to be more annoying than i already have been, "damn" is an acceptable clipped form of "damned."

as for mcatano -- i cannot say that i am particularly concerned as to whether or not i offend people.
