Deadly Sins on A Fixed Wheel Bicycle Ride

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? 1. telling yourself "fewer parts so the thieves won't want it" and dropping $1500 on a track bike

2. telling yourself "I better build a beater so my nice bike doesn't get stolen" and dropping $800 on a conversion

3. telling yourself "deraileurs and brakes weigh a ton" as your sling the 10lb NYC chain around your waist

hey, 46x17, what if you scream "can't stop no brakes!" at pedestrians? safe and hilarious!

1. gold velocity deep v's with suzue disco hubs.
2. wearing all black at night
3. thinking lights look "lame" on my bike.
4. no helmet ever
5. no emergency brake
6. b123's on the street
7. never been to the velodrome

i stop at all red lights and stop signs though.

edit: i just got my b123's and i love the narrow profile and lightness compared to my steel soma track drops...

i want to go to the velodrome, but after skateboarding for 20 odd years, the idea of paying to ride, wearing a helmet and following rules is hard to swallow. i know i'll get over it, velodromes look like a hell of a lot of fun. i just always hated P.E.

heh. i'm just competitive when i'm on my bike, so i figure i should put it to good use. on group rides i just ride with everyone else and talk and all...but on my own, i race cars, race joggers, race dogs, anything that comes along.

actually during the ride?

How about taking way too long to lock up outside the bar?! "Hold on, guys, I just gotta put one more u-lock through the chainring! Do you think I should use 'the Sheldon Method'? What? Where's my cable? Hold on, I forgot to take off my lights..."

holy ****. it took me forever the other night. kind of half cut wandering around outside trying to find the right place to lock up. trying to get the frame and the back wheel locked together with cable coming from the front wheel. out of frustration i just carried the thing inside. needless to say i was still paranoid someone was goign to fall into it, scoop it etc. damn...i need a beater!

I once went on a [fixed] ride with a few people. One chap rode a brakeless track bike with untaped chrome nitto drops, [I don't recall the exact model], no gloves, no water on a hot summer day. This was a 20-30ish mile ride with a few hills which could give a novice brakeless rider trouble . When we got back the kid couldn't grip a thing due to sweaty palms on untaped chrome drops, and his arms and hands were completely numb. Not to mention he was panting, sweating and without water. Oops. He was also the slowest, and also had the largest gear ratio. Oops again.

having a track bike cooler than 95% of the hipsters out there, but opting to ride your bridgestone XO-2 with full fenders and 21spds!
