Unrelated but I didn't notice anyone mention jonathan safran. His books Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close are not to be missed

How is that anyway? It's next on my list of "serious books". (At any given time I'm generally reading one serious book and one fiction.)
Right now I'm reading Neuromancer by Willian Gibson and Wisdom of Our Fathers by Tim Russert. Wisdom of Our Fathers makes me tear up a little so it's taking a little longer to get through. Plus, Neuromancer is so damn good I can't put it down.

Bicycle: The History-- David Herlihy...amazingly thorough history of the bicycle, with really outstanding photos and plates. Awesome book.
The Idea of Decline in Western History-- Arthur Herman...pretty interesting survey of the idea of decline in various Western philosophical movements.
Ulysses-- James Joyce...I try to read it every year, starting on Bloomsday, but I was doing summer classes this year, and got a late start.
I've also been pecking away at Plato's "Apology of Socrates" in the original, but it's slow going. Pretty interesting, though, and neat to see the choices various translators have made interpreting it.
