Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The Bible RSV

Pretty amazing book.

Dostoyevsky novels are all great.

Life of Pi was really good too

Unrelated but I didn't notice anyone mention jonathan safran. His books Everything Is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close are not to be missed

How is that anyway? It's next on my list of "serious books". (At any given time I'm generally reading one serious book and one fiction.)

Right now I'm reading Neuromancer by Willian Gibson and Wisdom of Our Fathers by Tim Russert. Wisdom of Our Fathers makes me tear up a little so it's taking a little longer to get through. Plus, Neuromancer is so damn good I can't put it down.

You should consider reading Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson if you haven't already.

edit: actually, The Diamond Age is a much better book.

I was just thinking that I want to read this series. I've read the Gunslinger when I was younger but never moved on to the rest.

bill buford's 'heat'...mario batalli documentary, basically. brow-beat the help 'cause their braising just ain't right.

his previous book, 'among the the thugs' is stellar...soccer hooligan documentary, basically. beat down the opposing fans after fish/chips/40pt lager 'cause they're opposing fans.

Bicycle: The History-- David Herlihy...amazingly thorough history of the bicycle, with really outstanding photos and plates. Awesome book.

The Idea of Decline in Western History-- Arthur Herman...pretty interesting survey of the idea of decline in various Western philosophical movements.

Ulysses-- James Joyce...I try to read it every year, starting on Bloomsday, but I was doing summer classes this year, and got a late start.

I've also been pecking away at Plato's "Apology of Socrates" in the original, but it's slow going. Pretty interesting, though, and neat to see the choices various translators have made interpreting it.
