May 1 Protest Thread

Where?
When?
How?
What will happen?
What happened?
Who is going?

In other words, what cities are having protests and who is going. I'm stuck at work, but I brought my fixed gear today. I'm off at 3:00 so I hope there's still something going in Sacramento by then. I forgot my cell, but I brought my camera.

Re-Cycle 05-01-06 09:31 AM

Don't do it

No_Minkah 05-01-06 09:33 AM

Chicago's is going to be large- estimating 300,000, but it's raining.

I think someone doesn't quite understand the concept of a general strike.

Cynikal 05-01-06 09:43 AM

The Sac protest starts at noon at southside park and ends up at the Capitol. Shouldn't be hard to find downtown.

It's not a strike. It's a protest and rally.

koyman 05-01-06 09:52 AM

I wore my red sweatshirt today.

shawnrock@gmail 05-01-06 11:55 AM

It's actually a general strike, accompanied by protests and rallies.

Mr. Clean 05-01-06 12:00 PM

Can somebody fill me in? What's getting protested today? I'd kind of like to protest final exam week. . .

shawnrock@gmail 05-01-06 12:01 PM

It's May Day. Look on Wikipedia or google.

Also immigrants' rights etc.

dommer 05-01-06 12:02 PM

thousands of protesters are walking under the notorious bird **** tree in orlando... and getting **** on.

bummer.

ZappCatt 05-01-06 12:02 PM

Illegal immigrants and their supporters have called for a general strike to show how important they are to the economy.

marqueemoon 05-01-06 12:14 PM

And when the country doesn't fall apart, what then?

SpiderMike 05-01-06 12:30 PM

The news around here reported this is "A Day Without Immigrants Rally". So far Houston has "thousands" meeting up in Memorial Park. More info on where the Houston rally is going here... http://www.click2houston.com/news/9137226/detail.html#

They don't want the country to fall apart, they want rights for immigrants and are trying to show the nation that they are an essential part of the US.

There are only 11-12 million working immigrants in this country. The only way for them to get attention is to march together, cause some traffic so people take notice, and boycott for a day. Cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego etc. will feel the effects.

I wouldn't expect Huntsville and Orlando to be affected.

ZappCatt 05-01-06 12:42 PM

No, there are a lot more "immigrants" working in this country than 11 million, there are supposedly 11-12 million ILLEGAL immigrants working in this country.

I don't know about Alabama, but there are a lot of cities and industries that really WOULD fall apart without immigrant labor.

I just don't believe anyone is ILLEGAL so I remove it from my vocabulary. Call it what you want.

Call it 'undocumented'

This is just silly. They are people and have rights like everyone else. They did however immigrate illegally therefore the term illegal immigrants is completely valid. We clearly shouldn't deport them all but they are illegal immigrants none the less.

if it's valid, but stupid, then can i refer to my "illegal" friends as undocumented? is that okay with you?

there are some other ways that i turn language into something i'm more comfortable with. should i email you a list so you can give me clearance?

No_Minkah 05-01-06 01:40 PM

An action is illegal, a person can't be illegal. Calling a person 'illegal' dehumanizes them. The names we use for things change the way we think about them, and people spend a lot of time and money framing a debate with a name. Do you think the terms 'Death Tax', 'Enemy Combatant', or 'War on Terror' happened by accident?
