Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Commuting, general transportation and recreation. And of course to look cool, who has reasons that dont involve that? I dont have anything else better to do with my time and money than messing with bikes

I use mine for all transportation+food delivery for a while. Lets be honest though. 90% of the kids I see its fashion.

I don't think that's the case. I think the majority of the people riding fixed are doing it because they like riding bikes and they like fixed-gear bikes more than bikes with gears. I think the pure fashion riders are a tiny minority.

On the other hand, fixed-gear bikes are better looking than gearies. So maybe part of why I like to ride is because of the elegance and beauty of the bike. Does riding a bike partly because I think it's attractive make me a fashionista biker? I don't think so.

I guess I just don't see that aspect. I live in northern Orange County, CA., and there isn't anything remotely "hipster" about that area. I can count the number of fixie riders I know on one hand, and it has nothing to do with culture, it has to do with being a bike person.

When I did Midnight Ridazz up in Los Angeles there were TONS of fixie riders that "looked the part", but I won't pass judgement on them 'cuz I don't know them. They could be trying to make a fashion statement, they could be track racers or messengers, or they could just be bike people. I dunno.

The only "fashion statement" I make is that for some reason I feel really off when wearing my roadie gear whilst riding my fixie. So I picked up some Oakley mountain bike shorts and a generic, 3/4 sleeve, plain jersey that I wear when on the fixie. No cycling cap with a flipped bill, though... I always roll helmeted.

I wanted something to roll 'round the neighborhood for beers and such; have some delusion that I'm going to commute on it (next week? egad), and general screwing around. Longest ride was last weekend, did 28 and change fooling around with a couple buddies, one on a mtb and one who's a newbie rider; taking the fixie was perfect for the speeds we were riding.

General transportation to school and everywhere else whenever the weather's not too bad. With that mileage, I hardly ever go out on fun rides. I guess if it wasn't for the commute, I would.
Lately I added some occasional messin' to the mix.

It's a little like asking why you drive a car with a manual transmission instead of an automatic transmission. I ride fixed because the control is fun.

I've been riding bikes since I was real little and I got tired of messing with my derailer and found an old Peugeot that I converted and it is now my main ride. -Will

Bikes: Lots. Mostly steel. Mostly heavy. Mostly geared, and very low, at that.

When I did ride fixed it was transport mostly. I just don't have time to ride recreationally anymore, not to mention the bad knees. Now I have built myself a tow-truck with no high gears to speak of (I generally don't go above 65 gear inches and even less frequently more than 70), which enables me to ride AND tow trailers full of magazines around.

started with transport, now i use it for commuting, going to places, errands, going nowhere, and gettin 'uge, heh. since i started riding i feel like i really know the city now and go to a lot more interesting places. riding fixed also got me into road riding and doing races and stuff.

its always a drag when i go somewhere with friends who don't ride or meet up with them, because then the bike really does become a rolling fashion accessory, hah. i come up with as many opportunities as possible to get places by bike.

Mainly recreation/fitness. It's hard to use it for anything else out where I live. It's 5 miles to the nearest "town" so there's not really much commuting to do. Occasionally I'll do the 30 mile r/t ride to the beach, or our group rides late at night which are probably ~20 miles or so.

I ride fixed because I don't live in NYC and it's a helluva lot harder to justify my elitest attitude on the rough and tumble streets of downtown Tampa without a track bike. And, hey...the chicks dig it, right?

Bikes: bfssfg iro--black.

you forgot the best reason: so i look like a messenger when i'm wearing my timbuk2.
nah, i do it cause i live in a pretty small college town, and it's more convenient to only use my car as a place to smoke weed and store other bikes. the amount of travelling i do around town can be accomplished on a bike much fast than in a car and i look good and have fun doing it.

If you regularly buy anything made of any type of plastic, you aren't oil free. Don't fool yourself.
