let's discuss why their limited anti theft warranty is void in ny state. i mean i kinda know why. but that is so crazy. had i known that, i probably would still have bought it. u people living in the subs of iowa sure have all the luck.

total bull****. I pay the same price for the same lock, it should be covered the same as the other states. It also just shows me the company won't really back up their product.

insurance is based on what the insurers predict what will happen. statistically, there is a much much greater chance you will need to be paid than someone in the rest of the states. should the rest of us pay more so you can be insured the same as us? i dont think so. i think it makes more sense for the underdog company to keep prices lower and cut the insurence on the bike theft hot-spot.

if i have the same car, am the same age, and have the same driving record as a female friend, i will need to pay more to insure my car. on the surface, its total bull**** - yes. but if you think about it from the insurer's perspective, it makes a lot of sense statistically.

These policies are actually a form of theft insurance, not a warranty. Certain state have laws restricting the offering of insurance policies unless the offering company obtains permits and licenses from that state's board of insurance. For a product that costs about $40 or $50, the cost of getting such a permit might far exceed any potential profit.

Frankly, if anyone carefully (very carefully) reads all of the "fine print' of bike lock policies, you would not really expect to recover much of anything from them. Typical requirements include:

- filing a police report promptly

- supplying the broken pieces of the lock (to prove the lock was actually correctly locked)

- filing claims with your renter's insurance or homeowner's insurance

After you do all of that, you are paid the depreciated market value of the bike, minus whatever you will collect from your homeowner's insurance.

Bottom line: use a "gold" rated lock with the Sheldon Brown locking method. That way, you never need to file a claim.

two very valid points. maybe new yorkers should pay a bit more. i mean, don't get me wrong. i really am broke, but the added security of my bike being replaced well help me sleep at night. it sucks. how is kryp locks. does it cover new york state. i always seem to by on guard and never had the chance to look at the competator's warrenty. i'm going to google the web site now and find out the scoop.

Insurance is a non physical item though. I'm holding a piece of metal that should protect my bike exactly the same no matter what graphic location it's in. Insurance is different than a lock. Just like a security system. ADT doesn't warranty their systems differently if you live in New York or Alaska.

If you read the kryptonite link you'll see that it has to do with NYC law. They are not allowed to offer the anti-theft 'warranty' on their locks, so they are forced to offer 'insurance' instead. It seems to me that OnGuard has chosen not to offer insurance in NYC which may or may not say something about the company.

I can't really comment on ADT too much (I don't know their policies) but does their warranty cover just their system, or your entire house? Kryptonite warranties their locks (if the lock breaks, they replace it) but they don't 'warranty' your bike in NYC.

Hi gang - I can't comment on other companies, but I can tell you a little bit about Kryptonite. Yoshi has pointed you to the Q&A on our site about the New York State Law that was passed in 1999 which, basically, voided any 'guarantee' offer. Not just on bike locks, but for everything and anything. Because of this law we wouldn't be able to offer additional protection to our customers in the whole state. That just wasn't acceptable! We worked for a very long time with the state and insurance companies to come up with our current offer. If the Kryptonite lock comes with an anti-theft protection offer (yes, we had to change the name of the program, too) it doesn't matter what state you live in - register and you are covered. Folks in NY get an insurance certificate back from us when they register as proof of the policy.
We might be the only bike lock company that is covered in New York state. I do know we are the only one that doesn't exclude messengers with the anti-theft protection offer. We aren't big into exclusion, if you haven't guessed.
Yoshi, I may be reading your last comment incorrectly, but if you have a Kryptonite New York series lock, and have registered for the anti-theft protection offer, your bike is covered in NYC, too.
