Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

for quiet try to get
-good chainline
-good chain tension
-good wet lube
-rear wheel correctly centered in dropouts
-round & straight chainring (cheap = often neither)
-tightening chain ring bolts evenly and lightly tapping it onto spider will help too
-maybe bushingless chain is quiter than bushing chain ? (hypothesizin, less moving parts ?)

Well what kind of chainring would you reccomend? I'm kind of looking for it to be black, 3/32", 110 BCD, and 39, 41, 43 teeth (so I don't get only one or two skid patches). And of course track or bmx, so no ramps or pins! Currently I'm looking at this Rocket Ring https://cgi.ebay.com/TRACK-FIXED-GEAR...QQcmdZViewItem . Is it any good?

rocket rings are flexy not very good quality

ta makes one it is nice but I think it is polished (these are very nice 1/8" you can get em from sheldon brown)

profile designs makes one as well but I don't know about the quality try asking the bmx forum

or you could get a boone ti ring

Yeah sure, although I'll want them to be new, or not worn down. I'm out of town for a week starting now, but PM me if you find anything.

Oh, does anyone know if Tron's option is a rocket ring (i.e. low quality) or good quality? It's looking mighty nice, although funny how it says "Fits all 1/8 and 3/32" chains." So I'm guessing if it fits them all, it's a 3/32".

Well, others have covered it, and this is only my second fixed gear, so I'm no expert but this is what worked:

1) Chainline, chainline, chainline - that's #1 because of the number of moving parts, and the amount of stress they are under, they will be noisy as he(double hockeysticks) if off even by 2mm
2) Spend enough on the components - you don't have to go Phil, but cheaping out will get you noisy stuff
3) Lubricate the chain regularly - I like white lightning

to reiterate, chainrings that aren't perfectly round cause slack in the chain during part of the revolution, which, when you're spinning along, tends to oscillate (sometimes violently), creating some noise and noticeable vibration.

clean the **** out of your chain, fix your chainline, check the chain tension, and replace the chainring if necessary.

white lightning & other wax based lubes, in my experience, can leave residue that makes cleaning a little more of a pain in the ass.
