Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

MKS GR-9's, huh?

What in the name of Zombie Jesus did you do here? That's got to be the wrongest way of feeding your straps through the buckle that ever wronged.

I made them out of a piece of suede leather I bought from a fabric store. It was a sheet of 8x10 and cost me $8 and some 15 mins on the wife's sewing machine. Basically just winged it as far as the design went but It is doubled in thickness and they have yet to show any wear since I made them a couple months ago. The christophe straps I got on ebay for $8/pair and they're the best of the cheap-o straps out there so these doublers are really a very economical way to feel snug on the bike without $90 toshis.

took a pic of the doubler from the bottom so you can get an idea as to how easy it is. I double stitched them so they wouldn't break apart and even with pretty basic thread they hold up to brakeless riding.

Awesome! Thanks a lot. Now I just have to find me a wife with a sewing machine... I'll hit up my alterations lady and see what she can do with an 8"x10" piece of suede. Then, hell, it's on! and +1 on the christophe straps...I have the same ones.

Zombi thread.

Instead of spending $100 on toshi's, you could buy an entire clipless set-up

https://www.totalcycling.com/index.ph...urrency&id=USD
Shimano M520 dual sided clipless pedals ~$30 shipped.

https://www.bikebling.com/ProductDeta...o-SH-MT32-Shoe
Shimano MTB walkable shoes ~$65 shipped.

You save $5, have superior foot retention, and have an extra pair of pedals for your parts bin or other bike.

Cons are, skidding ability reduced somewhat, can't wear your hipster Sambas/Tigers/Romas with these, and I'm sure there is something else...

I just don't understand spending $100 on toe straps...

Buttttt, if you are sure about wanting them, I don't think your feet will be slipping out no matter what straps you use. I've never had my feet slip out of straps when skidding, even when they weren't tightened down entirely.

Oh, and clipless are the new toshi's anyways. In terms of trendiness I mean.

You won't be slipping out but I think you can go with single straps. And, be careful about the clip sizes. Don't opt for smaller ones; always use larger ones, but prolly MKS stuffs are too small for some of yal. ... Clipless are nice, because you don't need to worry about that.

Noob here, so please tread gently. Hmm, did I read the past five pages and still don't know how to run double straps on the GR9. A post prior mentioned replacing a bolt to 1" instead of 1/8"? Can that be explained further, which bolt and where and is it just one bolt or?

The DIY Toe Strap Doublers at https://www.davidrmunson.com/convergence/?page_id=30, although sounding logically, bulletproof, is overdoing it. As much as I want to avoid clipless at all costs, I'd prefer clipless to running both $100 Toshi straps and strap doublers, with all that extra material and button heads, it's just way too much weight and overly busy. May as well run dual brakes on the bike with the "clutter" the pedal setup brings.

And I read elsewhere a user swearing by double straps behind the axle. This would eliminate the need for zip ties as well, which kind of is the same as the DIY strap doublers in that it takes something simple and makes it complicated.

On page 2 of this thread you'll see a guy that put zipties on his pedals to hold the front strap of his double straps. See those 2 short bolts connecting the clip to the pedal? Just replace those with longer bolts so that it holds the front strap in place.
