1.:

2: There are a number of NJS builders out there, but a limited number of components. Hatta, Shimano, Sugino, Nitto, and a very limited run of Campagnolo track stuff is NJS. All wheels are 36-spoke, all hubs are loose-ball bearing. Kashimax makes NJS saddles and top-tube protectors.
I'm sure there is a complete list on BF somewhere, but the results are probably swamped with stupid threads like this one full of people complaining.

Also NJS does not ensure quality or even durability I've used some pretty ****ty parts with an NJS stamp.

Yeah. The NJS stamp of approval is to ensure that all the Keirin bikes are essentially equivalent, to level the playing field. NJS approval does not mean higher quality than non-NJS stuff. Some NJS stuff, such as Dura-ace cogs and Sugino 75 cranks are good parts and reasonably priced in comparison to non-njs parts. But quite frankly, a lot of non-NJS stuff is a lot better than NJS stuff, sometimes at a fraction of the cost. NJS approved components are intended for use by professional cyclists who make a living off of people gambling billions of Yen every year. A lot of money is involved and thats why you pay out the nose for the stuff. NJS parts were never meant to be marketed to dirtbag starving messengers and students. The fact that its trendy only makes it even more expensive. If you aren't making your living riding on NJS parts, then you are wasting your money on those NJS parts. Go NJS if you are so into the idea of NJS that you are willing to pay for it, but if you really want the best track bike money can buy or even a practical street fixie, NJS is not the way to go.

Bikes: Makino (have the parts; not yet built), EAI Barekuckle, Unknown Japanese fixed conversion, Centurion Dave Scott Ironman road bike (frame), Secret project bike, 2007 Trek Madone 5.2, Cannondale Caad3 mountain bike
So, you don't know what NJS is or means, but your next bike is going to be all NJS? To use a phrase you seem to love so much, that's "****ing" stupid.
I have nothing against trying to gain knowledge, but trying to spec out your bike to meet some standard you know nothing about but heard through the grapevine is 'cool' or 'really good' is really dumb.

I feel for the guy as well. A helluva lot of bull goes down on these forums. But, fixedup, it's a quick lesson, it's a freakin' jungle in here. But the negative posters are just chewin' off their noses' 'cos the rest of us just think, what a freakin' c-hunt.

Isnt a forum a place to come and find out information? jesus ****ing christ, all you stuck up *******s kill me. And why is it a stupid question, I dont know the answer so I ask on A BIKE FORUM. If you're so stuck up and dont have anything to answer my question, then shut the **** up and dont reply cause your waste of space reply does no good here. Im sick of seeing people on forums not answer questions and then just spew bull**** out of there mouth maybe cause A) they can't answer the question or B) cause they're just *******s. So **** all of you with your internet lingo and remarks that do nothing than to build up your internet ego, your internet forum status doesnt impress anyone, it just shows how much time you waste on a computer.
and dont ride in the rain after a nice big njs
for the already mentioned butt moisture ambiguity problems

He asked what parts are njs approved (and said he already knew Dura Ace was).
Good question! Try finding a simple answer to this....probably not on here anywhere, I only know of a vague guide by Tomity (legend) stating what companies have made parts.....
FIXEDUP - Here you go mate.....
Saddles - padded Kashimax 5GOLD FG8P, non-padded 5GOLD FG7P and FG4P (cheapest).....they come in black suede, brown suede, and white, black, brown, pink and 1 or 2 other colours in smooth finish.
Seatposts - Only NITTO Jaguar SP are sold new in 2007. Sugino finished, suntour finished, dura/easton finished, campa finished.
Cranks - Only Dura Ace and Sugino make NJS approved cranks now. Sugino 75 and Grand Mighty, Dura Ace square taper and octalink (which have hollow arms and are very light, and expensive)
BB - Hatta is the most popular with the R9400 model, Dura Ace make a cheaper njs BB, as do Sugino.
Pedals - Only MKS make NJS pedals now. RX1 are light and small, Custom Nuevo are bigger but also sealed, Royal Nuevo are silver versions of CN with unsealed bearings and are cheaper. Campa, Kyokuto pro ace, and suntour superbe pro used to be available but are long gone. If you have any of them keep them!!
Clips - NJS approved clips are now all MKS, either steel adjustable, steel non adjustable, alum non adjustable. Campa used to make some steel ones which looked the same as MKS steel, but had a nice campa crest etched on top!
Straps - are made by Fujitoshi, Kashima, and Mikashima in either single or double. Mikashima and Fujitoshi are suede double thick, and kashima are too and are laminated for a smooth top finish. Cream only. MKS are black only. Fujitoshi are in red/blue/white/black.
Chains - made by DID, IZUMI, and HKK VERTEX.
Hubs - only Dura Ace !
Sprockets - Sugino GIGA ($$!), Dura Ace.
Lockrings - only Dura Ace.(and sugino)
Chainrings - Sugino, and Dura Ace only now.
Chaintugs - Mikashima the only NJS approved model.
Stems - Nitto steel or aluminium NJPRO, or Pearl the only NJS stems.
Bars - Only Nitto steel or alum drops. B123 or B125.
Grips - Soyo Long grips, Champ, Strong G (cant remember who makes each)
Top tube protector - Kashima 5GOLD peko dome
Headset - Dura Ace and Hatta Swan Super Deluxe (most popular in Keirin by far)
Rims - Araya GOLD 16B world champion
Tyres - Soyo
Spokes - Hoshi and Asahi (double butted stainless spokes)
=============
Here are the current NJS approved parts that are not NJS stamped/marked as far as I know .....
Grips (all), kashima top tube protectors, hoshi and asahi spokes, kashimax dual sprint double strap(sorry they have now started stamping them with NJS, but have left out the coupling patch thing).
-------------------------
Sorry if I forgot some stuff....think it is all there...!

Dutret - What were the parts you weren't happy with? Just wondering because I have only ever had a problem with MKS aluminium clips, after accidentally standing on them a bunch of times, I snapped one while skidding!
Other than that everything has been good to me, and these parts have a very high reputation in Japan, not with 'hipsters' but serious bike enthusiasts/pros/mechanics etc...

What I don't get is why NJS gets all the hype even though track racing used to be hugely popular in the US. Why aren't the hipsters trying to emulate their USA track cycling idols and building bikes just like theirs?
